The story of a green-painted house in Nuwakot, Nepal, has captured public attention after it survived a catastrophic flood. The owner, Prakash, reflected on the harrowing moments when floodwaters from the Trishuli River surged towards his property, nearly claiming his family’s lives. He expressed a sense of despair during the crisis, fearing that it could be their final moments together.

Prakash was at a nearby shop when he heard about the rising waters. Acting quickly, he rushed home to alert his family. However, upon stepping outside, he was confronted by the overwhelming force of the flood as it swept away his vehicle, prompting him to retreat back indoors. His family, comprised of five members, initially took refuge on the fourth floor of their house.

Struggles During the Brutal Flood

The floodwaters continued to rise, ultimately reaching even the fourth floor, forcing the family to seek higher ground within their home. Prakash described the moment as terrifying, noting that the water reached considerable heights. Amidst the chaos, his thoughts were focused on his son, who had not yet returned from school. The uncertainty of his son’s safety weighed heavily on his mind as they awaited rescue.

The survival of the house amidst widespread destruction has sparked discussions on social media, with many questioning its ability to withstand the flooding. Prakash attributed its resilience to the quality of construction materials used during its building approximately 40 years ago. He emphasised that a strong foundation, reinforced by additional layers of road material, contributed to the house’s durability.

Despite the structural integrity of the green house, the lower sections suffered extensive damage, as they were used for storage of goods from Prakash’s shop. He noted significant losses, including two vehicles and various motorcycles, indicating the toll the flood took on their resources.

Rescue Operation and Aftermath

The family endured approximately one to one-and-a-half hours stranded at the top of their house before help arrived. Residents from a nearby toll area reached out to them, employing a pipe and rope to rescue the family from their precarious situation. This intervention marked a pivotal moment in their survival during the flood’s peak.

Once rescued, the family began the arduous task of salvaging whatever belongings remained. Essential items and everyday supplies were moved to safer locations as they assessed the damage to their home and shop. The southern portions of the building endured significant destruction, raising concerns about the future of their logistics and livelihood.

Although they faced overwhelming losses, Prakash expressed gratitude that all family members had survived the experience. Currently, they are staying in Kathmandu while contemplating their next steps toward rebuilding their lives. Despite the overwhelming destruction, he stated their determination to try again and make a fresh start, indicating resilience in the face of adversity.

Community Support and Recovery Efforts

The green house, situated along the route from Nuwakot to Rasuwa, remains largely intact, a remarkable sight against the backdrop of devastation surrounding it. Most structures nearby were severely affected, including a grocery shop located on the lower floor of the same building.

Access to the area remains challenging, with the road between Nuwakot and Rasuwa suffering significant damages. Individuals must travel approximately 1.25 kilometres from the nearest reachable point to access the house. Ongoing rescue and recovery efforts are being supported by members of the Nepal Army, working diligently to assist affected families within the region.

The story of Prakash and his family’s ordeal highlights both the destructive power of natural disasters and the fortitude of those affected. The survival of the green house stands as a testament to enduring strength amid seemingly insurmountable challenges.
