Nepal’s Gen Z Pick Ex-Chief Justice Sushila Karki as Interim Leader Amid National Crisis

The CSR Journal Magazine

Amid escalating political unrest and the resignation of key national leaders, Nepal’s Gen Z movement has chosen former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the interim head of government. In a large-scale virtual meeting involving over 5,000 young participants, Karki emerged as the preferred candidate after Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah failed to respond to outreach efforts.

Gen Z Demands Accountability and Reform

The virtual assembly was organized following widespread protests over corruption, government repression, and the deaths of demonstrators. Youth representatives emphasized the need for a neutral and competent interim leader to oversee the nation during this transitional period. Karki reportedly requested a minimum of 1,000 written endorsements to accept the role, but quickly received more than 2,500, showing strong grassroots backing.

While Karki emerged as the consensus choice, several other public figures were considered during the discussion, including Kulman Ghising, head of the Nepal Electricity Authority; youth leader Sagar Dhakal; Dharan Mayor Harka Sampang; and YouTuber Random Nepali. The latter expressed conditional interest, saying he would step in only if no other capable candidate accepted the role.

Violent Unrest Forces Government Resignations

The Gen Z-led initiative follows days of violent protests across the country. Demonstrators stormed and torched key government buildings, including the Prime Minister’s Office, the Supreme Court, and Parliament. Over 20 people, including Rajyalaxmi Chitrakar, wife of former PM Jhalanath Khanal, were killed. Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel was assaulted on the streets by angry protesters.

Sushila Karki, 72, holds a historic place in Nepal’s judiciary as the country’s first female Chief Justice. Appointed in 2016, she is known for her fearless rulings, including cases on transitional justice, electoral disputes, and women’s rights to citizenship. A civic figure with no political ties, Karki is widely respected for her integrity and commitment to justice.

What’s Next?

If Karki formally accepts the role, she is expected to first hold talks with Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel and then seek approval from President Ram Chandra Poudel. Gen Z participants are continuing to vote in a 24-hour online poll on Discord, with Karki maintaining a commanding lead in support.
