President Droupadi Murmu and her Romanian counterpart Nicusor Dan have committed to enhancing bilateral trade between India and Romania, aiming to double it over the next three years. This accord emerged during Murmu’s official visit to Romania, where the two leaders engaged in discussions covering a broad spectrum of topics vital to their nations. This visit, part of a three-nation European tour, marks the first by an Indian head of state to Romania in more than 30 years.

During a press briefing, Murmu provided insights into the productive talks, outlining the importance of economic cooperation as a foundational element of their partnership. Both leaders converged on the need to promote investments, fortify resilient supply chains, and facilitate closer business interactions. “We will work towards doubling our bilateral trade over the next three years,” she stated.

Defence collaboration was also identified as a significant facet of the India-Romania relationship. The two nations aim to enhance joint efforts through regular exchanges, training, and capacity-building initiatives, thereby fostering closer ties between their defence sectors. Murmu underscored the necessity of advancing cooperation in these critical areas.

Strengthening Cultural and Educational Ties

In her remarks, Murmu highlighted the integral role of education, culture, and interpersonal connections in the India-Romania relationship. She referred to the signing of three agreements aimed at promoting joint research and development in science and technology. An Indian Studies Chair will be established at the University of Bucharest with support from the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, an initiative expected to enhance mutual understanding of both cultures.

Furthering cooperation in sports was also part of the memorandum signed during the visit. These educational initiatives and agreements pave the way for deeper cultural exchanges, providing a framework for enhanced collaborative engagement between the two nations.

Murmu emphasised Romania’s significance as a key partner for India within the European Union, noting that the completion of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement earlier this year presents unprecedented opportunities for both industries and skilled professionals. The two leaders also concurred on expanding cooperation across sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, renewable energy, and agriculture.

Future Collaboration and Technological Engagement

The Indian government has committed to doubling the number of training opportunities available for Romania under its Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme, which will include courses in Artificial Intelligence. Additionally, the Foreign Service Institute has proposed training options for Romanian diplomats, enabling their participation in a Professional Course designed for Foreign Diplomats, featuring modules on Cyber Diplomacy.

Both nations continue to engage in collaborative efforts under the International Solar Alliance, to which Romania is a member. Romania’s forthcoming membership in the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and the Global Biofuels Alliance was also welcomed during the discussions between the leaders.

Looking ahead, as India and Romania prepare to celebrate 80 years of diplomatic relations in 2028, the two countries have agreed to observe the milestone as the ‘India-Romania Year of Innovation.’ This initiative reflects their commitment to fostering innovative partnerships.

Murmu’s arrival in Romania was marked by a reception from Romanian Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia oiu, followed by a ceremonial guard of honour at the Cotroceni Palace, where she was received by Dan. The Ministry of External Affairs has indicated that this visit signifies an important advancement in the enduring and multifaceted partnership between the two nations.
