Mumbai Nurse Falls Victim to Rs 1 Lakh Online Scam

The CSR Journal Magazine

A nurse employed at a private hospital in Mumbai was reportedly defrauded of Rs 1 lakh while attempting to purchase a dress advertised online for Rs 299. According to police sources, the incident occurred between April 16 and April 20, 2026. The nurse, who resides in a hostel in the city, lodged her complaint with the Deonar police station.

The nurse had come across a Facebook advertisement promoting dresses at an attractive price of Rs 299. Intrigued, she proceeded to place an order, initiating a series of financial transactions that would ultimately lead to her significant loss.

Initially, the individual on the other end requested payment for the dress. However, as the conversation developed, additional fees emerged. These included purported shipping charges, GPS fees, tracking costs, verification codes, and confirmation charges for her address, which the nurse was led to believe were necessary for the delivery process.

Sequence of Transactions

The victim recounted that over the span of five days, she sent a total of Rs 1 lakh in various payments. Each time she transferred money, she received assurances that a significant portion would be refunded and that her order would soon be fulfilled. This false reassurance persisted, leading her to continue sending funds without suspicion.

In response to her report, the Deonar police began to investigate the matter. Initial findings indicated that the fraud was executed through the use of social media, specifically a Facebook advertisement, as well as a WhatsApp contact and a fictitious delivery representative.

Current Status of the Investigation

The Deonar police have officially registered a case and are currently delving deeper into the fraudulent operation. They are gathering evidence related to the advertisements and financial transactions that have been linked to the scam. The use of social media platforms in such schemes has raised concerns among law enforcement regarding online safety.

The vigilance of users while making online purchases has become increasingly crucial, as demonstrated by this incident. Law enforcement agencies are urging individuals to remain cautious, especially when encountering deals that appear too good to be true, to avoid falling prey to similar scams.

As investigations continue, the police aim to track down the individuals behind the fraud to bring them to justice and prevent further victimisation of online shoppers. The case serves as a pertinent reminder of the risks associated with online transactions and the necessity of thorough research before making purchases.
