The CSR Journal Magazine

The mortal remains of 15 Indian nationals who tragically lost their lives in a boat accident off the coast of Vietnam’s Phu Quoc island have arrived in Ho Chi Minh City. This information was confirmed by the Embassy of India in Vietnam on Sunday. The Embassy stated that the deceased will be repatriated to India once all necessary formalities are completed.

In a statement released on the social media platform X, the Embassy expressed its commitment to facilitating a swift repatriation process. It has been coordinating closely with the local Consulate teams and Vietnamese authorities to ensure that all assistance is provided for the timely transport of the mortal remains to India.

Details of the Boat Incident

The incident involved a tourist speedboat named AG 26751, operated by Ocean Pearl Island Company, which was carrying 32 Indian tourists along with four crew members from Hon May Rut to An Thoi Port. According to information from Vietnamese news outlet VN Express International, the boat capsized approximately 400 metres off Hon May Rut Ngoai on Saturday.

Further investigations have led to the detention of a 57-year-old local man for allegedly violating legal regulations related to the operation of the tourist boat. This development highlights ongoing efforts by the authorities to address accountability in relation to the tragic event.

Alongside the grim recovery efforts, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu has taken steps to expedite the repatriation process for the deceased. District Collectors have provided comprehensive details regarding the designated family members who will receive the remains.

Current Status of Survivors

The handling of survivors has also been a priority. The Embassy reported that 15 survivors from the boat incident have been discharged from medical facilities and are currently on their way back to India. This positive news comes amid the tragic circumstances surrounding the accident.

Among the survivors, one individual named Gelli Kishore encountered significant health complications during his transfer from Phu Quoc Government Hospital, resulting in delays. Kishore has reportedly fallen unconscious and remains in an Intensive Care Unit, receiving advanced life support. MRI investigations revealed a small blood clot in his brain, along with indications of a mild cardiac episode, prompting an immediate emergency cardiac procedure.

The special commissioner for Andhra Pradesh Bhavan, Arja Srikanth, has stated that efforts are ongoing to manage Kishore’s critical condition, and further evaluations will determine the next steps for his airlift to Ho Chi Minh City for more intensive medical care. The Indian Ambassador to Vietnam has been actively communicating with medical personnel during this challenging time.

Coordinated Efforts Between Authorities

Coordination among Indian and Vietnamese authorities has been constant throughout this crisis. The Vietnamese Minister visited the hospital to oversee the wellbeing of the survivor, and attempts to bridge any language barriers have been made to facilitate effective communication among the Embassy, medical teams, and Kishore’s family.

Despite the tragedy, a unified effort continues to ensure support for those affected. The Embassy has maintained comprehensive communication with both the local medical teams and the families of the victims. As the situation evolves, the community remains hopeful for the continued recovery of the survivor and the successful repatriation of the deceased individuals.
