The CSR Journal Magazine

MLA College from the United Kingdom and the Institute of Marine Engineers (India) (IMEI) have initiated a strategic partnership aimed at offering internationally recognised UK postgraduate education to maritime professionals in India. This collaboration is expected to play a crucial role in the development of India’s maritime workforce while reinforcing educational ties between the UK and India.

The formal announcement of the partnership took place during Singapore Maritime Week 2026 when a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed. The official launch was celebrated at the MLA College India Launch Reception on 2 July 2026, which took place at The Lalit hotel in Mumbai, attracting approximately 150 senior leaders from various sectors, including the government, maritime industry, and academia.

The event showcased the commitment of various stakeholders to enhance collaboration in preparing future maritime leaders. Attendees included prominent figures such as Shri Killi Mohana Rao, Chief Surveyor of the Directorate General of Shipping, among others.

Addressing Industry Challenges Through Education

The partnership emerges at a time when India is advancing its status as a significant player in the global maritime sector through investments in logistics, ports, and green shipping practices. However, the industry faces notable transformations due to decarbonisation and digitalisation trends, necessitating a highly skilled workforce to meet the evolving demands.

By providing access to flexible, recognised postgraduate qualifications, the collaboration between MLA College and IMEI aims to equip maritime professionals with the skills required for advanced roles in this rapidly changing environment. This educational framework allows participants to pursue their studies without needing to relocate, ensuring they can continue their professional careers simultaneously.

The initial programmes offered under this partnership cater to maritime professionals preparing for or seeking advancement beyond their First Engineer and Chief Engineer Certificates of Competency (CoC). These programmes not only enhance technical knowledge but also focus on developing management and leadership skills essential for contemporary maritime contexts.

Commitment to Sustainable Maritime Operations

Among the innovative offerings is MLA College’s MSc in Sustainable Maritime Operations, which addresses the need for skills in decarbonisation and sustainability within the maritime industry. This programme aims to provide professionals with vital insights into sustainable shipping and responsible practices, aligning with the industry’s increasing emphasis on environmental stewardship.

Prof. Mohammad Dastbaz, Principal and CEO of MLA College, highlighted the significance of India’s evolving maritime landscape, stating that this partnership is pivotal for making high-quality education accessible to established professionals. Through this collaboration, there is a clear intention to foster leadership and innovative thinking in maritime practices.

Kaushik Seal, President of IMEI, also underscored the importance of this partnership, indicating that it marks a transformative moment in Indian maritime education. By merging IMEI’s professional network with MLA College’s academic prowess, they aim to provide comprehensive development opportunities tailored to the needs of maritime professionals in India.

Future Prospects of the Partnership

The partnership is positioned as a long-term commitment to enhancing the capabilities of India’s maritime workforce. Both organisations aim to work closely with industry stakeholders and professional bodies to continuously support the evolving educational needs of the sector.

MLA College’s affiliation with GEDU Global Education further amplifies its reach, as it extends access to quality education across numerous countries, impacting over 85,000 students globally. This initiative is designed to enhance knowledge within the maritime sector and set a benchmark for excellence in professional development.

Through this strategic alliance, MLA College and IMEI not only aspire to nurture future maritime leaders but also to strengthen India’s influence in the global maritime economy by cultivating a skilled and knowledgeable workforce ready for upcoming challenges.
