Manickam Tagore Backs Vijay, Says People’s Verdict Cannot Be Suppressed

The CSR Journal Magazine

Congress MP Manickam Tagore has voiced concerns regarding efforts by political opponents to obstruct TVK leader Vijay from assuming the Chief Minister role in Tamil Nadu, despite a clear mandate from the electorate. On May 9, Tagore stated that those political figures who have lost public support are attempting to hinder Vijay’s ascension to the position, highlighting the significance of the people’s choice. He remarked, “Power may delay the people’s verdict, but it can never suppress it forever,” indicating that any opposition to the democratic process would ultimately be futile.

In a post shared on X, Tagore emphasised the resilience of popular will, asserting that defeated leaders are reemerging with tactics intended to impede Vijay’s journey to the Chief Ministership. He called for vigilance against such actions, labelling them as unjust threats to democracy that must not be tolerated. The statement underlines a growing tension in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape and the increasing stakes surrounding Vijay’s potential leadership.

Violence Alleged Against Congress Protesters

Meanwhile, Congress leader S Rajesh Kumar has condemned the alleged violent actions taken by members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) during a Congress-organised protest in Mayiladuthurai. This protest was aimed at criticising the Tamil Nadu Governor’s actions, which the Congress party described as a “murder of democracy” by denying Vijay the chance to form the government. Kumar labelled the response from DMK affiliates as politically indecent and a violation of democratic principles.

In his official statement, Kumar described the protesters’ actions as a legitimate expression of dissent and condemned any aggression directed at them. He underlined that while differences in opinion are common in politics, violence cannot be justified. The Congress party’s protest was framed as a serious call for democratic integrity and respect within the political arena, reflecting wider concerns regarding political behaviour in Tamil Nadu.

Kumar further asserted that such intolerant actions are out of place in Tamil Nadu’s political history, urging immediate corrective measures from the DMK to prevent future incidents. He called on law enforcement to investigate the events surrounding the protest and to take appropriate legal actions against the perpetrators, stressing the need for maintaining peace and order in political discourse.

Alliance Dynamics Shift Post-Elections

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has been further complicated by changing alliances following the recent elections. Historically long-time allies, Congress and DMK are now on opposing sides of the political spectrum. While the TVK, led by Vijay, has emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats, Congress won five seats and has decided to withdraw from their alliance with the DMK, opting instead to support the TVK.

In addition to Congress’s shift, the Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) have also pledged their support to the TVK, each contributing two seats to bolster Vijay’s position. This reconfiguration of alliances suggests a significant realignment of political forces within the state, indicating potential changes in governance and policy direction in the coming months.

The situation remains fluid as Vijay actively seeks to consolidate his position in the assembly, with negotiations ongoing to secure additional support from smaller parties to reach the necessary majority of 118 seats. The evolving dynamics will likely have lasting implications for the political climate in Tamil Nadu as both established parties and new contenders navigate the challenges ahead.
