Mani Shankar Aiyar Recommends Rahul Gandhi to Reconsider INDIA Bloc Leadership

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent interview, veteran Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar emphasized the significance of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the opposition coalition known as the INDIA bloc. After expressing support for Pinarayi Vijayan ahead of the upcoming Kerala elections, Aiyar stated that the success of the alliance heavily relies on Banerjee’s leadership. He advised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to permit leaders from smaller parties to take the helm of the coalition for its survival. Aiyar specifically noted, “Without Mamata di, the ‘I’, ‘N’, ‘D’, ‘I’, ‘A’ of the INDIA alliance all will be gone.”

Recollections of Political Journey

Aiyar reflected on his early political association with Mamata Banerjee, recalling his brief tenure as the first National Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, which he joined in 1997. However, he left soon after, concluding that the party was deeply embedded in Bengali identity. Aiyar expressed that he still identifies with the Congress party, stating, “I consider myself to be in Congress, but it seems they may have decided to expel me.” He added that despite reports of his expulsion, he had yet to receive any formal notification, asking, “If you want the Congress’ view, ask a Congressman.”

Support for Kerala’s Left Democratic Front

Earlier in the discussions, Aiyar praised the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. His remarks sparked further controversy. While speaking to another news agency, Aiyar dismissed the authority of the current Congress leadership, asserting his political alignment with historical figures like Gandhi, Nehru, and Rajiv Gandhi, but explicitly stated, “I am not a Rahulian.” He invoked B.R. Ambedkar’s perspective on dissent, positioning himself as an ideological participant with the right to speak out.

Contention with Congress Spokesperson

Aiyar’s criticisms escalated when he targeted Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera, openly stating, “I have absolutely no respect and complete contempt for Pawan Khera… He is not a spokesperson, he is a parrot.” These remarks prompted swift action from the Congress party, which sought to differentiate itself from Aiyar’s comments. Khera issued a statement on X, declaring, “Mr. Mani Shankar Aiyar has had no connection whatsoever with the Congress for the past few years. He speaks and writes purely in his personal capacity.” This statement highlighted the party’s intent to distance itself from Aiyar amid the contentious atmosphere.

Political Landscape Ahead

As discussions unfold within the opposition alliance, the dynamics surrounding the leadership and direction of the INDIA bloc remain fluid. The approach advocated by Aiyar for collaborative leadership among smaller parties may set a tone for future negotiations. The focus on Mamata Banerjee underscores her pivotal role in the coalition, which aims to present a united front against the ruling government in forthcoming elections. Aiyar’s reflections on personal identity within the Congress and his critiques of its current leadership present a complex picture of the party’s internal discourse as it navigates contemporary political challenges.
