Mamata Announces Salary Hike and Schemes for Women & ASHA Workers Ahead of 2026 State Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The West Bengal government has increased the monthly financial assistance provided under the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme by ₹500. The announcement was made ahead of the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. This revision in assistance is effective immediately, benefiting eligible women across the state enrolled in the welfare programme.

Launched in 2021, the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme offers basic income support to women from economically weaker sections. The increment aims to further bolster the financial independence of women and address household needs.

Enhanced Honorarium for ASHA Workers Implemented

Alongside the revision in the Lakshmir Bhandar scheme, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also declared an increase in remuneration for Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) workers. This hike is aimed at recognising the efforts and contributions of frontline health workers, especially in rural and remote areas.

ASHA workers play a key role in the delivery of healthcare services, particularly maternal and child health, and have been pivotal during public health emergencies.

Additional Benefits for Unemployed Youth

In addition to the initiatives for women and health workers, the state government has introduced measures intended to support unemployed youths in West Bengal. While specific figures regarding allowances or programme enhancements for job seekers have not been detailed, the announcement indicates that new or improved schemes are being implemented to address youth unemployment.

These initiatives come in the backdrop of increasing focus on welfare and employment ahead of the forthcoming state elections. The measures are intended to expand the state’s direct benefit support system.

Government’s Focus on Social Welfare Schemes

The State’s recent decisions reflect a continuing emphasis on large-scale welfare schemes focusing on women, healthcare workers, and unemployed individuals. With a significant portion of the population enrolled in programmes such as Lakshmir Bhandar, these policy changes are expected to impact a wide demographic.

The latest financial adjustments are being operationalised immediately, allowing beneficiaries to receive increased payments beginning with the next cycle. The administrative machinery has been directed to ensure that the disbursement process remains smooth and efficient.

The West Bengal Assembly elections are scheduled to take place in 2026.
