Maharashtra to Audit Charitable Trust Hospitals for Rule Compliance

The CSR Journal Magazine

Maharashtra Minister Shambhuraj Desai has announced a series of inspections targeting hospitals operated by charitable trusts. These inspections aim to ensure adherence to governmental regulations. Reports indicate that the state government will deploy district-level committees to evaluate whether these hospitals are fulfilling necessary requirements, such as displaying treatment dashboards and implementing designated health schemes.

During a session in the legislative council on July 7, 2026, Desai articulated that any hospitals identified as violating standards during these inspections would be subjected to rigorous consequences. He highlighted that the government is also scrutinising allegations of overcharging patients, with the possibility of appointing special public prosecutors to address such complaints as required.

Monitoring Compliance with Free Treatment Information

Minister of State for Urban Development, Madhuri Misal, emphasised the legislative requirement for charitable trust hospitals to exhibit dashboards that provide information regarding free treatment options available to patients. She revealed that a significant number of hospitals have yet to comply with this obligation, prompting the administration to issue fresh mandates aimed at driving compliance.

These directives will be monitored by appointed ‘Arogya Doot’ or health volunteers. These individuals will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of health initiatives and ensuring that hospitals follow regulations diligently. Misal’s statements underscore the government’s commitment to maintaining transparency in healthcare provisions.

Desai also added that ongoing compliance checks will be facilitated through the established district-level committees. These bodies are required to convene regularly to confirm that hospitals adhere to health policies relevant to the services they provide.

Emphasis on Government Health Schemes Implementation

The minister reiterated the necessity for all eligible charitable trust hospitals to implement governmental health schemes effectively, specifically mentioning the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana. This scheme is integral to providing health coverage and financial protection to the underprivileged sections of society.

Instructions are set to be dispatched to the Additional District Collectors, who will serve as the member secretaries of these committees, urging them to activate the special inspection drive immediately. Desai’s declarations reflect an unwavering government stance on safeguarding patients’ rights and ensuring that healthcare facilities operate within the established legal framework.

Healthcare institutions that continue to breach the rules after inspections will be subject to stringent repercussions. The government’s commitment to monitoring charitable trust hospitals has been reinforced, with officials indicating that measures will be taken to ensure transparency and accountability in delivering health services.
