Maharashtra Floods: 3,000 Gas Cylinders Swept Away From HPCL Bottling Plant

The CSR Journal Magazine

Severe flooding in the Khalapur region of Raigad district has resulted in a significant industrial emergency, as around 3,000 gas cylinders from a Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) bottling plant were swept into the Patalganga River. Reports indicate that the incident took place on July 9 amid relentless rain in the area.

The bottling facility, located in Chavane within the Panvel taluka, was overwhelmed by rising waters from the Patalganga River. The strong currents not only carried away fully filled gas cylinders, but also those that were empty, creating a hazardous situation.

Khalapur Police Inspector Abhijit Bhujbal confirmed the details of the incident, prompting immediate action from local authorities. The district administration responded by issuing an urgent alert for the public to remain vigilant in light of the developing situation.

Authorities Urge Residents to Exercise Caution

Raigad District Collector Kishan Jawale expressed serious concerns for residents living near the riverbanks. He urged individuals to refrain from approaching any gas cylinders they may encounter in the river or along its banks. “Do not touch or attempt to relocate any gas cylinder under any circumstances,” Jawale stated.

The administration underscored the significant risks involved, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the condition and contents of the gas cylinders that were dislodged by the flooding. Officials cautioned that any interference could potentially lead to severe consequences, including gas leaks or explosions, which would pose a substantial threat to life and property.

To address the situation, a comprehensive search operation is currently underway, involving various local authorities, the Disaster Management Department, and personnel from HPCL. The ongoing efforts aim to recover the missing cylinders and ensure public safety.

Community Members Encouraged to Report Suspicious Sightings

In light of the incident, citizens have been advised to maintain a safe distance from the river and to report any cylinders they see to local police or the Disaster Management Department immediately. This cooperation is crucial in preventing any accidents associated with the missing gas cylinders.

The search teams are actively monitoring the flow of the Patalganga River, with the aim of recovering the displaced stock while guaranteeing the safety of residents. The administration continues to remain vigilant, as their priority is the protection of the community amid the backdrop of this industrial emergency.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by flooding, particularly in industrial areas where hazardous materials may be involved. Authorities are committed to resolving this situation swiftly to mitigate any risks to the local population.
