Lawyer for Samarth Singh Denies Dowry Harassment Allegations in Twisha Sharma Death Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing investigation into the suspected dowry death of Twisha Sharma has seen Gyanendra Sharma, the lawyer representing the accused Samarth Singh, assert that the family is cooperating with authorities. He maintains that the circumstances surrounding Twisha’s death are a case of suicide.

According to the advocate, following the report of Twisha’s suicide on 12 May, legal formalities were initiated, and the case has now been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), with a second post-mortem scheduled.

During a recent statement, Gyanendra Sharma expressed that the family has no objections to the ongoing investigation, fervently wishing for the truth to emerge. Samarth Singh, who has turned himself in, apparently faces ongoing legal proceedings in Jabalpur, with his bail application having been rejected. Furthermore, the status of bail for Giribala Singh, another accused, is pending in court.

Dismissal of Dowry Claims

The legal representative categorically rejected the allegations of dowry harassment purportedly levelled against Samarth Singh and his family. He described such claims as baseless, stating that both families are educated and originate from respectable backgrounds. He clarified that the couple had met through a matrimonial website, and that the Supreme Court has taken note of the case, with the family anticipating a just outcome.

In providing a timeline regarding the events leading up to Twisha’s death, Gyanendra Sharma referenced CCTV footage that is said to corroborate the family’s account. He asserted that records indicate that on the evening of 12 May, the three individuals—Samarth, his mother, and Twisha—were together in the hall around 8:30 to 9:00 PM. Following a phone conversation with her mother, Twisha is reported to have gone upstairs, where she was later found hanging by family members.

Sharma also described the immediate responses from Samarth upon this tragic discovery, stating that he attempted to lift Twisha down, sought assistance from his mother and household help, and performed CPR before rushing her to the hospital. He noted that the police were notified promptly regarding the incident.

Ongoing Legal Proceedings and Supreme Court Involvement

In addressing claims that Samarth attempted to evade law enforcement, advocate Gyanendra Sharma clarified that the accused was merely seeking to navigate legal channels. He emphasised that the family is fully cooperating with the investigation team and refuted any allegations suggesting that Samarth had absconded. He pointed out that Samarth sought anticipatory bail before voluntarily surrendering.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the Supreme Court initiated a suo motu case titled ‘In Re Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepancies in the Unnatural Death of a Young Woman at Matrimonial Home’. This case, presided over by Chief Justice Surya Kant, is scheduled for a hearing on Monday.

On 23 May, a local court in Bhopal placed Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, under police custody for a week, from 23 May to 29 May, for additional questioning. Singh was reportedly apprehended in Jabalpur on 22 May. The case has drawn considerable public attention, especially after Twisha’s family accused her husband and his family of subjecting her to mental torment and dowry harassment, prompting widespread outrage and calls for a thorough investigation. The Madhya Pradesh government has already recommended a CBI inquiry, while Twisha’s family continues to demand an impartial examination of the case.
