Lawrence Bishnoi Gang Allegedly Threatens Violence in Canada

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has reportedly instilled fear within law enforcement agencies across British Columbia, Canada, by threatening widespread shootings. Evidence presented in a local court has indicated that the gang claims to have 1,000 members ready to engage in violent acts. This alarming information came to light during a deportation hearing held by the Immigration and Refugee Board, The Independent reported. The letter, which had been sent to a police station in Abbotsford in August 2025, has drawn significant attention as authorities attempt to contain an escalating extortion crisis.

In testimony, Constable Kevin St Louis described the letter as outlining the criminal structure of the gang, detailing their operational capacity. St Louis stated, “This specific letter outlined essentially their criminal organisation, where they talked about having upwards of 1,000 individuals who are willing to carry out these shootings as a part of the group.” This information highlights the potential scale of violence that law enforcement may face if the gang’s demands are not met.

Extortion Threats Targeting Local Businesses

The gang has described its activities as a protection racket, framing their extortion demands as “taxes” that businesses must pay to avoid violence. According to the testimony provided, businesses that refuse to comply may experience threats to their safety. “It also alludes to how every business needs to pay their tax, which I think clearly demonstrates the monetary gain that this group is looking to obtain as a result of these extortions,” Constable St Louis added.

Sergeant Paul Walker has confirmed that detectives are actively investigating the origins of this threatening letter and its contents. He stated that the details have been shared with law enforcement partners tackling the extortion crisis nationally. While Walker could not provide specifics about ongoing investigations, he recognised the serious implications of the threat presented by the gang.

In recent years, Canada’s police have struggled with the rise of organised crime, particularly those involving extortion and shootings targeting the South Asian community. Several high-profile cases have raised alarms, including a shooting near singer AP Dhillon’s home and gunfire linked to a cafe associated with comedian Kapil Sharma, both incidents reportedly related to extortion demands attributed to the Bishnoi gang.

Recruitment Tactics and the Profile of Targets

According to police reports, the Bishnoi gang utilises individuals from the Indian community in Canada to carry out their extortion schemes. These individuals, often temporary foreign workers or on student visas, are allegedly offered small sums for their involvement in targeted shootings and killings. The detective noted that many recruits are drawn to the sense of belonging that comes from being part of such a group. This connection can lead them to be more susceptible to recruitment, particularly among younger individuals in educational settings.

The officer highlighted that extortion demands are typically communicated through WhatsApp, frequently using the names of Lawrence Bishnoi and his associate Goldy Brar. The testimony regarding the letter and the gang’s operations raises significant concerns about the breadth of their extortion network and the associated threat of violence in Canada.

Estimates suggest that approximately 3.38 million people of Indian origin reside in Canada, comprising around 8.3 per cent of the total population. The presence of such a large community has drawn the attention of organised crime groups, particularly those involved in extortion schemes. The situation necessitates ongoing vigilance from law enforcement to safeguard affected communities from potential violence.
