Karnataka Government Increases Minimum Wages for Labourers by 60%

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Karnataka government has announced a 60 per cent increase in minimum wages for workers, which will significantly impact labourers in Bengaluru. Under the new wage structure, workers in the city are set to receive a minimum monthly wage of Rs 23,376. This adjustment is part of broader measures aimed at enhancing the economic security of workers across the state.

Labour Minister Santosh Lad communicated this decision, asserting that it responds to a longstanding demand from the labour community. He emphasised that the revised wages would provide better financial stability, especially for those in the unorganised sector as well as those employed in recognised industries.

Aside from Bengaluru, the revised minimum wages in various regions of Karnataka will fluctuate between Rs 19,300 and Rs 21,251. The specific figures depend on the location and category of employment, outlining the state’s detailed approach to wage distribution.

Structural Changes in Wage Classification

A significant transformation in the wage classification system has also been announced. The Karnataka government has decided to eliminate the previously established four-zone classification model. For the first time, all scheduled employments will now fall under a single notification, aimed at simplifying the wage determination process.

This overhaul is expected to bring clarity and uniformity to the wage structure, benefitting workers engaged in 81 scheduled occupations in the state. The Labour Minister highlighted that this comprehensive approach ensures greater adherence to standards and better economic conditions for workers.

Minister Lad stated that this reform is a major step forward in labour policy and aligns with directives from the Supreme Court regarding minimum wage determination. The integration of all scheduled employments under one framework represents a modernisation of labour laws in Karnataka.

Government Support and Future Implications

In light of these changes, Minister Lad expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and other cabinet members for their support of the Labour Department’s proposal. Their collective efforts have facilitated the implementation of this essential labour reform.

This wage increase is expected to directly benefit a considerable number of workers across Karnataka, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their efforts. The government aims to foster enhanced economic security, positively influencing the lives of many families in the state.

As the implementation of the revised wage structure progresses, it is anticipated that ongoing oversight will be necessary to ensure compliance and realise the full benefits of this initiative. The Karnataka government remains committed to improving the working conditions for its labour force, marking a significant milestone in the state’s labour relations.
