Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced an all-party meeting on August 2 to discuss the ongoing Cauvery River water dispute. The meeting will involve former Chief Ministers, Members of Parliament, and Members of the Legislative Assembly from the Cauvery basin area. This initiative follows the direction from the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) for Karnataka to release 3,500 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu over the next 15 days.

Shivakumar stated that an appeal has been filed with the CWMA regarding the water release directive. The Chief Minister emphasised the need for unity among political leaders in addressing the concerns related to the water issue. He has been in communication with Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and other prominent MPs, working collaboratively to serve the interests of Karnataka.

Government’s Appeal and Response to Opposition

In response to the order from the CWRA regarding water allocation, Chief Minister Shivakumar remarked that the situation is developing. Previously, pleas for water release were denied by the authority, leading to the current appeal filed by the state government. He indicated that discussions had been held with relevant ministers and officials to navigate the matter further and convene discussions with opposition leaders once he returns to Bengaluru.

Shivakumar addressed the suggestion made by DMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss, who proposed that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay engage with the central government rather than with Karnataka Congress leaders. Shivakumar reiterated the importance of mutual respect among states and called for cooperative efforts to resolve the matter, underscoring the law of the land as the guiding principle.

The Cauvery Water Regulation Committee has advised Karnataka to release a total of 4 TMC of water within the specified timeframe. The state is actively exploring options in light of this recommendation and will formulate its response accordingly.

Protests Erupt in Tamil Nadu

As the Cauvery water dispute intensifies, protests have emerged in Tamil Nadu, reflecting public concern over the water allocation issue. The protests highlight the significant stakes involved for farmers and communities relying on the river’s resources. The situation continues to develop, with both states keenly monitoring each other’s actions regarding water rights and distribution.

On another note, CM Shivakumar responded to remarks by BJP MP BS Yediyurappa concerning the expansion of the Cabinet. He reiterated that previous administrations have functioned without a full cabinet and challenging the BJP leader’s criticisms. Amid these discussions, gatherings are in progress within the Congress party to determine the composition of the Cabinet ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Karnataka Assembly.
