Karman Kaur Thandi Eliminated from French Open After Disappointing Qualifier

The CSR Journal Magazine

Karman Kaur Thandi’s much-anticipated return to Grand Slam tennis concluded in disappointment as she was defeated in the qualifiers for the French Open on Tuesday, May 19. The former Indian No.1 experienced a challenging match against France’s Harmony Tan, who claimed a swift 6-1, 6-0 victory in only 48 minutes.

Thandi, who entered the tournament using a protected ranking, struggled to establish any rhythm against her opponent. Tan, widely recognised for her notable upset against Serena Williams at Wimbledon in 2022, effectively dominated the match, showcasing her superior skills and strategy.

Match Dynamics Shifted Early On

From the beginning, Thandi faced significant difficulties in asserting herself on the court. Tan’s precise serves and consistent returns placed Thandi under immediate pressure, resulting in multiple unforced errors that severely hampered her efforts to gain control. Despite moments of promise, where Thandi displayed sharp shots, she could not maintain her competitive edge against Tan’s sustained excellence.

Thandi’s backhand was particularly exposed, yielding a series of forced mistakes that reduced her scoring opportunities. Her initial serve percentage was also inconsistent, making it challenging to maintain pressure on Tan. In contrast, Tan executed her game plan with discipline, taking full advantage of Thandi’s weaknesses and securing five break points out of eight attempts throughout the match.

Even during scoring opportunities for Thandi, Tan’s composure proved decisive. The French player expertly navigated longer exchanges and capitalised on Thandi’s errors, resulting in a match that quickly shifted in Tan’s favour.

Struggles Intensify in the Second Set

As the match entered its second set, the trend of Thandi’s struggles continued to escalate. Her timing issues persisted, and her shot selection became increasingly questionable as Tan maintained her dominance on the court. The French player delivered strong serves and maintained a high level of aggression that kept Thandi on the back foot throughout.

Despite some moments of resilience from Thandi, she was unable to gain any meaningful momentum to turn the tide. The combination of rising unforced errors and Tan’s relentless pressure contributed to a contest that was heavily one-sided by its conclusion. Thandi’s potential was overshadowed by inadequacies in her performance, leading to a heavy defeat.

The match illustrated the challenges faced by Thandi in her return to a Grand Slam setting, where consistency and composure are crucial. As Harmony Tan progressed in the tournament, she prepared to face the winner of the match between Darja Vidmanova and Xinyu Gao, while Thandi was left reflecting on an opportunity missed on an important stage of her career.
