JKSA Appeals to Andhra Pradesh CM Over Allegations of Harassment of Kashmiri Students

The CSR Journal Magazine

Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has formally approached Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, seeking immediate intervention concerning alleged harassment and discrimination experienced by Kashmiri students at the Government College of Nursing in Kurnool. The association highlighted reports of verbal mistreatment, lack of arrangements for Ramzan meals, restrictions on wearing hijab, and threats of expulsion from hostels.

Student Experiences Highlighted in the Letter

In its correspondence, JKSA noted that approximately two dozen Kashmiri students, predominantly young women enrolled in BSc Nursing programs, have expressed serious concerns. Many of these individuals are beneficiaries of the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme, designed to assist students from Jammu and Kashmir. The association stated that such conditions have fostered a climate of fear and psychological distress, adversely affecting their academic performance and overall well-being.

Allegations of Meal Denial and Restrictions

The students reported that during the holy month of Ramzan, their requests for essential meal arrangements for Sehri and Iftar were dismissed. They also alleged that they were barred from ordering food from outside and lacked adequate flexibility to observe their fasts. Furthermore, some students claimed they were questioned about their choice to attend a government college in Andhra Pradesh due to their commitment to religious practices.

Concerns About Religious Freedom

JKSA reiterated concerns regarding the pressure exerted on students to remove their hijabs and discouraged from participating in religious ceremonies, which they described as a violation of fundamental rights protected by Articles 15 and 25 of the Indian Constitution. Reports of verbal abuse, including derogatory labels such as “terrorists,” were also raised. The letter indicated that some students were threatened with suspension and eviction from their hostel without proper justification.

Request for Inquiry and Support

The association referred to these developments as “deeply disturbing” and called upon the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister to initiate a fair and timely inquiry into these allegations. It also requested immediate measures to ensure that students are not subjected to harassment or penalties for practicing their faith and that necessary provisions for Sehri and Iftar are made available.

Hope for Inclusivity in Andhra Pradesh

JKSA remarked that Andhra Pradesh has a historical reputation for inclusivity and progressive education. The association expressed hope that prompt action from the state government would protect the dignity, safety, and academic future of the affected students while upholding the constitutional values inherent in the democratic framework of the nation.
