J&K School Publication Draws Criticism for Glorifying Terrorism

A book has ignited significant criticism after it was reportedly approved for use in government school libraries in Jammu and Kashmir. The publication, titled ‘Personalities and Legends of J&K’, is alleged to glorify terrorists and separatist leaders while referring to the region as “Indian Held Kashmir” and “Indian Occupied Kashmir”. These claims have led to widespread outrage within the community, generating a political controversy regarding its inclusion in educational materials.

The controversy escalated as allegations surfaced that the book, which bears the logo of Samagra Shiksha, J&K, depicts Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) member Maqbool Bhat as a “Shaheed”, or martyr. Additionally, renowned separatist figures such as Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Masarat Alam, and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq are reportedly presented in a positive light. This portrayal has raised serious concerns among citizens and political leaders alike.

Questions surrounding the approval process of this book have heightened as allegations indicate that it should never have been authorised for educational use. Critics argue that such material could promote divisive narratives and undermine the integrity of the educational system in the region.

Political Reactions and Demands for Action

In light of the uproar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vocally condemned the Omar Abdullah government, labelling the situation an example of “academic jihad”. BJP representatives are calling for an immediate ban on the book, as well as an in-depth investigation into how it was greenlit for distribution in schools. The party has also demanded the dismissal of the Education Minister, Sakina Itoo.

The Jammu and Kashmir People’s Forum has similarly voiced their concerns regarding the book’s content, echoing the BJP’s call for its prohibition. Their demands reflect a broader plea for accountability in the educational materials approved for school libraries, urging a review of the criteria used in the selection process.

Opposition parties are pressing for urgent measures to scrutinise all educational content, given the serious allegations surrounding the book. They argue that the approval of such material undermines educational integrity and potentially influences young minds in a negative direction.

Implications for Educational Oversight

The controversy surrounding this book has intensified calls for rigorous oversight of educational materials within Jammu and Kashmir. Political leaders and community activists alike are urging for reforms that would ensure that textbooks and other learning resources adhere to acceptable standards and do not contain contentious or inflammatory content.

This situation has raised an important discourse regarding the responsibilities of educational authorities in safeguarding students from biased or radical interpretations of history and contemporary issues. Stakeholders are highlighting the necessity for a transparent approval process that involves thorough examination of all educational resources.

As this issue develops, it remains crucial for the government to address community concerns regarding the suitability of what is taught in schools. The outcry over this book reflects broader anxieties about how ideological perspectives may infiltrate education in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir, underscoring the need for careful management and oversight in educational policy and content approval.
