Israel Launches Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon, Seven Fatalities Reported

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Saturday resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals, with additional persons sustaining injuries. The military operations reportedly included the demolition of sections of a Catholic convent located in a border village, as confirmed by local officials. This escalation of violence occurs in a region already tense due to ongoing hostilities between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah.

In the village of Yaroun, Israeli forces utilised bulldozers to level parts of the convent, which had been vacated amid the recent conflict. Gladys Sabbagh, superior general of the Basilian Salvatorian Sisters, remarked on the demolition, indicating that the convent housed a school, closed since the 2006 warfare between Israel and Hezbollah, and a clinic that had relocated to a nearby village.

Sabbagh noted that only two nuns resided in the convent, both of whom were displaced due to the violence. As local residents have fled their homes, further details regarding the situation remain scarce.

Dispute Over Military Usage of Religious Site

The Israeli military defended its actions by stating that they were targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in the area. They claimed that damage occurred to a building that lacked religious markings, and that their forces acted swiftly to minimise harm once the building’s association with the church was recognised. The military also mentioned that the compound had previously been used for rocket launches against Israel.

In contrast, the Catholic Church in Lebanon strongly rejected the Israeli military’s assertions. Rev. Abdo Abou Kassm, director of the Catholic Centre for Information, stated their opposition to any actions against places of worship, emphasising that these sites are meant to foster peace and education, not serve as military bases.

This incident follows widespread condemnation of an Israeli soldier reportedly vandalising a statue of Jesus in the village of Debel, intensifying public outrage regarding military actions against religious symbols.

Ongoing Conflict and Escalation of Attacks

Despite the ongoing ceasefire, hostilities persist as Israeli airstrikes and Hezbollah retaliatory attacks continue in southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s National News Agency reported an airstrike on a vehicle in the village of Kfar Dajal that resulted in two fatalities, along with another strike on a home in Lwaizeh that killed three individuals. Additionally, two casualties were reported in Shoukin following another airstrike.

The Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesperson stated that approximately fifty airstrikes targeted Hezbollah positions over the previous 24 hours. Hezbollah responded by attacking Israeli troops in the coastal village of Bayed with a drone, underscoring the volatility of the situation.

Over the preceding weeks, the Israeli army has systematically targeted various neighbourhoods in southern Lebanon, claiming to demolish structures utilised by Hezbollah operatives. A recent video purportedly released by Israeli forces purported to show the destruction of Hezbollah assets, including a booby-trapped soccer stadium in Bint Jbeil.

Ceasefire and Casualty Figures

The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah escalated significantly on March 2, starting with rocket attacks from Hezbollah directed at northern Israel. This escalation followed a military campaign by the United States and Israel against Hezbollah’s main ally, Iran. The two nations have engaged in direct negotiations for the first time in over thirty years, despite being in a formal state of war since Israel’s establishment in 1948.

A ceasefire was initiated on April 17, which was extended three weeks later. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that the ongoing conflict has resulted in 2,659 fatalities and 8,183 injuries over the past two months, highlighting the urgent humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
