Iran’s Envoy to Russia Declares US and Israel’s Attacks Have Failed

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, has declared that both the United States and Israel have not achieved their military objectives in their recent actions against Iran. In an interview with the Russian publication Vedomosti, Jalali expressed that the US will not fare better through diplomatic negotiations than it did in military engagements.

Reflecting on the original ambitions of the opposing forces, Jalali stated that they had initially claimed they could overthrow the Iranian government within days. He questioned their achievements, stating, “Not in one. The attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel have failed.” This assertion emphasised the ineffectiveness of their military strategies.

Shift in US Objectives During Conflict

During the course of the conflict, Jalali observed that US demands noticeably transformed, narrowing from aspirations for political regime change to more specific maritime interests. Initially, he indicated, there was an expectation of total upheaval in Iran, which later shifted to merely aiming to secure the Strait of Hormuz. Jalali labelled this transformation as a failure of their initial ambitions.

Further commenting on the naval blockade, he argued that such actions were futile given Iran’s steadfast will to pursue its objectives. Instead of weakening Iranian resolve, he maintained that the ongoing conflict has instead reinforced their determination against external threats.

Jalali also pointed out that the US had previously shown support for Iran’s ten-point proposal but then withdrew its backing as the situation evolved. This withdrawal signifies a deterioration in trust and a reduction in willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue.

Ceasefire and Prospects for Negotiation

As the current two-week ceasefire approaches its expiration on April 22, Jalali’s comments emerge amidst mounting tension. The first round of negotiations to address the ceasefire reportedly ended in a stalemate, particularly concerning vital issues like Iranian nuclear capabilities and control over the energy corridor known as the Strait of Hormuz.

The imminent expiration of the ceasefire raises the stakes for further diplomatic discussions. These discussions, set to occur in Islamabad, represent a final opportunity for de-escalation before potentially escalating into broader conflict. The outcomes of such talks could significantly impact the future landscape of the region.

While US officials assert that a “fair and reasonable” deal remains on the table, Jalali’s remarks indicate that Iran is unwilling to negotiate under the duress of a blockade. This contextual backdrop suggests that the intensity and length of previous negotiations may have merely set the stage for a more severe confrontation rather than a peaceful resolution.
