Indian-Origin Doctor Charged in Daughter’s Death Amid Allegations of Cover-Up

The CSR Journal Magazine

Authorities in the United States have revealed details surrounding the case of Dr. Neha Gupta, an Indian-origin paediatrician from Oklahoma City, who has been formally charged with second-degree murder following the death of her four-year-old daughter.

The incident took place in June 2025 at a rental property in El Portal, Florida, where the child was discovered unresponsive at the bottom of a swimming pool. Initial reports stated that the child had accidentally drowned, but recent developments have prompted further investigation.

A 911 call made by Dr. Gupta has surfaced, in which she expresses panic while reporting that her daughter had fallen into the pool. During the call, she told operators, “I tried to get her out. We were sleeping and I heard some noise. She was in the pool. I tried to save her, but I don’t know how to swim.” The operator advised her to find an object to assist in retrieving the child from the water. Gupta then inquired about the arrival time of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), to which the operator reassured her that help was on the way.

Timeline of Events Leading to Arrest

Following the incident, first responders arrived at the location at Dr. Gupta’s direction. Despite their attempts to resuscitate the child, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital. Dr. Gupta informed the authorities that she and her daughter had traveled from Oklahoma to stay at the short-term rental. However, her ex-husband, Dr. Saurabh Talathi, expressed surprise that their daughter had left Oklahoma, especially given their ongoing custody dispute.

On July 2, 2025, detectives from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Homicide Bureau arrested Dr. Gupta after gathering evidence and interviewing those involved. A police affidavit indicated that the child’s autopsy revealed no water in her lungs or stomach, indicating that drowning was not the cause of death. The medical examiner also noted signs of smothering, including cuts inside the child’s mouth and bruises on her cheeks, which contradicted Dr. Gupta’s version of events.

Discrepancies in the Doctor’s Account

Dr. Gupta had claimed that she and her daughter fell asleep around 12:30 AM and later discovered that the child was missing, suggesting that she had gotten out of bed and fallen into the pool. However, officials concluded that the child had died prior to being placed in the water, raising further suspicions about the circumstances surrounding her death.

The University of Oklahoma, where Dr. Gupta served as a physician, confirmed her removal from patient care duties and subsequent termination on May 30. According to the arrest document, investigators allege that Gupta attempted to cover up the homicide by staging the scene to resemble an accidental drowning.

Legal Proceedings Underway

The case has attracted considerable attention due to its serious nature and the tragic loss of a young life. As legal proceedings progress, the intricate details surrounding the case are anticipated to unfold further. The revelations from the investigation raise critical questions regarding the safety and welfare of children in familial and custody disputes.
