Indian Embassy Issues Advisory in Mexico After El Mencho Killing Triggers Violence

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Embassy in Mexico has issued an urgent advisory asking Indian nationals in several regions to remain indoors following a major security operation that reportedly killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the powerful leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

According to Mexican authorities, Oseguera Cervantes was wounded during a confrontation with soldiers in Tapalpa, Jalisco, and later died while being airlifted to Mexico City. The operation is being described as one of the most significant blows to organised crime in recent years.

Indian Embassy’s Advisory

In its advisory, the Indian mission urged citizens in Jalisco State, including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara, as well as parts of Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Guerrero and Nuevo León, to “shelter in place until further notice” due to ongoing security operations, road blockages and criminal activity.

The embassy also provided an emergency contact number for assistance, emphasising that the situation remains fluid and potentially dangerous as security forces continue operations across affected regions.

The Operation

Officials said at least six suspected cartel gunmen were killed during the operation, three soldiers were injured and hospitalised, and two suspects were arrested. Authorities also seized a large cache of weapons, including rocket launchers capable of targeting aircraft and armoured vehicles.

Within hours of the announcement of the cartel leader’s death, violence escalated across multiple states. Armed groups reportedly set vehicles on fire, blocked major highways and engaged in clashes with security forces, paralysing transport networks and triggering widespread panic.

The unrest prompted international alerts, with the United States and Canada also advising their citizens in affected areas to remain indoors amid reports of flight disruptions, road closures and sporadic armed confrontations.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is considered one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal organisations, heavily involved in drug trafficking, extortion and armed territorial conflicts. Analysts warn that the death of its leader could trigger internal power struggles or further retaliatory attacks.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as security deployments intensify, while foreign missions urge their nationals to exercise extreme caution until stability is restored.
