The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has released footage showing the sinking of an Iranian oil tanker, the MT Kylo, in the Gulf of Oman following a military strike. This operation is part of what Washington describes as an increasing campaign against Iran. CENTCOM has confirmed that the Comoros-flagged vessel was lost after its crew evacuated the ship.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, CENTCOM stated, “Thanks to the precision and professionalism of American service members, the MT Kylo sank in the Gulf of Oman today and joined Iran’s navy at the bottom of the sea.” This comment appears to poke fun at Tehran amidst heightened military tensions between the US and Iran.

The released video depicts the tanker engulfed in flames before it ultimately submerged. CENTCOM remarked that the MT Kylo was among several Iranian oil tankers targeted by US forces amid escalating confrontations between the two nations.

Multiple Iranian Tankers Affected by Recent Strikes

This attack follows CENTCOM’s earlier announcement regarding strikes on three Iranian oil tankers on September 5. The operations came in response to an incident involving Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) attacking US Navy warships. Along with MT Kylo, two additional vessels — the MT Downy and MT Stark 1 — were also affected; although they were rendered inoperable, they remain afloat.

The actions represent a significant intensification of American military operations targeting Iranian commercial and petroleum-related assets. The recent strikes raise concerns about potential disruptions to oil shipments and maritime trade within the region.

Iran’s Strong Reactions to US Military Actions

Iran has firmly condemned the United States’ recent military actions against its oil tankers. The Islamic Republic’s Embassy in India publicly denounced the alleged attacks on Iranian commercial vessels in both the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman via a post on social media.

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs labelled the US operations as “illegal and irresponsible,” accusing Washington of perpetuating military aggression, a naval blockade, and economic warfare against Iran. The ministry highlighted that such actions breach Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter, which forbids the use or threat of force against states.

Additionally, the ministry characterised these attacks as war crimes, posing a threat to both global peace and maritime stability. Iran’s stance indicates a resolute commitment to contesting these US actions in the context of international law.

In a retaliatory move, the IRGC announced that it had launched ballistic missile attacks targeting a US aircraft carrier and destroyer, claiming both ships sustained damage and were compelled to leave the area. The IRGC emphasised its offensive capabilities and warned that sustained US aggression would elicit severe responses from Iran’s military forces.

Iran’s military remains steadfast in its promise to defend the nation’s sovereignty and security. A tweet from the Iranian Embassy in India reiterated that any continuation of aggressive actions by the US would expect corresponding responses from Iran’s armed forces.
