Alexander Zverev has progressed to the fourth round of the US Open after overcoming a mid-match challenge against Alejandro Tabilo, seed number 25, with a score of 6-2, 7-6(2), 6-2 on Saturday. This match marked another step in Zverev’s journey as he seeks a deep run in the tournament.

Entering the match, Zverev had already spent a substantial nine hours and 26 minutes on the court due to previous five-set encounters against Lorenzo Sonego and Quentin Halys. Determined not to extend his playtime further, Zverev opened the match with intensity, taking the first set in just 43 minutes.

During the opening set, Zverev broke Tabilo’s serve twice, showcasing his powerful groundstrokes that kept his opponent under pressure. His dominance continued at the start of the second set, as he pulled ahead 4-2, indicating a solid control over the match.

Mishaps and Recovery in the Second Set

However, Zverev’s performance dipped unexpectedly, allowing Tabilo to seize the moment. The Chilean player capitalised on Zverev’s reduced focus, winning three consecutive games and nearly taking the second set. Zverev managed to halt the momentum shift, forcing a tiebreaker where he regained his rhythm despite initially trailing.

In the tiebreak, Tabilo started strong, claiming two of the first three points. Yet, Zverev responded decisively, winning six consecutive points to clinch the second set. This recovery was crucial in allowing him to maintain an upper hand going into the final set.

With renewed momentum, Zverev entered the third set confident. Although Tabilo threatened early on by creating break-point opportunities, Zverev’s resilience shone through as he maintained his serve and ultimately secured control of the match.

Closing Stages of the Match

As the third set progressed, Zverev broke Tabilo’s serve to establish a 4-2 lead. This break was pivotal, occurring after Tabilo made a double fault. Zverev then held his remaining serves without difficulty, edging closer to victory as the match drew to a close.

Zverev concluded the match with an impressive tally of 42 winners compared to Tabilo’s 22. He successfully converted six of his 13 break-point chances, showcasing his ability to capitalise on crucial moments while Tabilo struggled to maintain the level that had briefly challenged the German player.

This victory propels Zverev into the fourth round, where he will face 21st seed Luciano Darderi. The upcoming match will determine who secures a spot in the quarter-finals, intensifying the competition as the tournament progresses.
