The Indian Army Chief, General Dhiraj Seth, was granted the title of Honorary General of the Nepal Army during a ceremonial event conducted by Nepal’s President, Ramchandra Paudel. This investiture ceremony took place at Sheetal Niwas in Kathmandu on Monday. General Seth’s visit to Nepal is officially a four-day trip, initiated at the invitation of General Ashok Raj Sigdel, the Chief of the Nepal Army.

Significance of the Honorary Rank

This conferral of the honorary rank marks a continuation of a tradition dating back to 1950, whereby Nepal and India bestow the title of honorary general upon each other’s army chiefs. Such gestures reinforce the longstanding military ties and goodwill between the two nations. The relationship has been nurtured over decades, grounded in mutual respect and common interests.

During his official visit, General Seth had discussions with General Sigdel, focusing on various matters of mutual concern and strategies to further enhance bilateral military cooperation. The exchanges during the meeting aimed to deepen the longstanding operational relationship between the Indian and Nepalese armed forces.

According to a press release shared by President Paudel’s office, notable attendees of the ceremony included Nepal’s Vice President, Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Foreign Minister, Shisir Khanal, and India’s Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, along with senior military officials from both nations.

Activities During the Visit

General Seth’s itinerary included a series of engagements designed to reinforce diplomatic and military collaboration. He held meetings with Ambassador Srivastava at the Indian Embassy, where discussions revolved around enhancing the comprehensive relations between New Delhi and Kathmandu. The embassy highlighted that the visit reiterated the unique defence partnership founded on shared values and mutual trust.

On Monday, General Seth also oversaw the delivery of military and medical supplies to the Nepal Army. This act is indicative of the commitment to assist Nepal in strengthening its defence capabilities. The visit also featured a ceremonial planting of a sapling at the Army Headquarters, symbolising solidifying ties and future growth.

Furthermore, General Seth received and inspected a guard of honour during his visit, illustrating the cordial military exchanges between the two nations. The Nepal Army expressed optimism that General Seth’s presence in the country would foster deeper trust and cooperation between the armies of Nepal and India.

Enduring Defence Relations

The entire visit encapsulated several critical components, including the honorary rank awarding, military discussions, and the delivery of equipment. These actions illustrate the ongoing commitment to maintaining robust defence relations between India and Nepal. Both countries are keen on bolstering their collaborative efforts, which have been crucial in ensuring regional stability and security.

The visit by General Seth is a testament to the historically strong military ties that continue to adapt to contemporary challenges while focusing on mutual benefit and strategic partnership. The goodwill generated from such interactions is expected to yield positive outcomes in the defence sector as both nations navigate evolving geopolitical landscapes.
