External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar commenced his official visit to Ghana on October 7, 2026, engaging with President John Dramani Mahama. This meeting marked the first leg of his tour, which also includes Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia. Jaishankar’s discussions with President Mahama were centred on enhancing the existing partnership between India and Ghana, a relationship that has gained significant momentum since Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the West African nation last year.

Key Discussions on India-Ghana Partnership

During the meeting, Jaishankar extended warm greetings from Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Mahama. He emphasised the strong progress achieved in bilateral relations and expressed appreciation for Mahama’s vision regarding Ghana’s developmental goals. The discussions also focused on broadening the Comprehensive Partnership that both nations share across various sectors.

Jaishankar’s comments reflected a positive outlook on the ongoing collaboration, as he noted the potential to deepen ties between India and Ghana further. The External Affairs Minister acknowledged the shared interests in enhancing both trade and economic cooperation in addition to development initiatives.

Jaishankar’s visit is not only a platform for bilateral discussions but also an indicator of India’s commitment to fostering deeper ties with African nations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the strategic importance of this engagement in promoting solidarity with the Global South, reaffirming India’s position in international collaboration.

Broader Objectives of the Three-Nation Tour

The official trip from October 6 to 10, 2026, intends to cover multiple areas of interest, including development cooperation, capacity building, and people-to-people connections. Jaishankar is set to hold meetings with leaders from all three countries to review and enhance these bilateral ties. The meetings will encompass various topics including trade relations and areas of mutual benefit, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of the cooperation frameworks in place.

In addition to his discussions in Ghana, Jaishankar’s itinerary includes meetings in Côte d’Ivoire and Ethiopia, where he is expected to engage with counterparts to address regional and global concerns that affect both India and the African nations involved. The trip is also aimed at solidifying India’s role and presence in Africa, amidst evolving global political dynamics.

Jaishankar is also scheduled to chair the Regional Heads of Mission Conference during his visit to Addis Ababa, which underscores the significance of this diplomatic tour. The MEA indicated that these engagements will be essential in furthering India’s diplomatic objectives and expanding its partnerships in Africa.
