India Repatriates 2,411 Citizens From Myanmar Cyber Scam Compounds, 150 Still Stranded

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has confirmed that 2,411 Indian nationals have been repatriated from cyber scam compounds in Myanmar over the past one and a half years. A significant effort has been made to return these individuals, many of whom were allegedly trapped in online fraud operations based in remote areas of Southeast Myanmar. This information was shared during a special briefing held on June 1, 2023, by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Misri confirmed that over 150 Indian citizens are still believed to be stranded in these compounds. He stated that the ongoing situation is being closely monitored and that efforts are continuing to facilitate the return of these individuals. The MEA’s focus has been on ensuring the safe passage of those still trapped and enhancing cooperation with the Myanmar government.

During the briefing, Misri emphasised that India remains actively engaged with Myanmar regarding this issue. The necessity of collaboration concerning the safety of citizens was highlighted, indicating the serious nature of the problem associated with trafficking into these cyber scam operations.

Aspects of Trafficking and Coordination

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed the broader implications of the problem, mentioning that many Indian nationals are trafficked to these compounds via third countries. This kind of trafficking raises significant concerns about security and the need for enhanced regional coordination. The secretary indicated that there is a pressing need for bilateral efforts between India and Myanmar to tackle this complex issue effectively.

Misri further stressed that the crisis necessitates not only bilateral cooperation but also a regional collaborative effort to combat human trafficking and cyber crimes. The involvement of third countries in this trafficking network highlights the urgency of establishing comprehensive strategies that encompass the wider region.

The discussions during this briefing were part of high-level meetings held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar’s President U Min Aung Hlaing, reinforcing the importance India places on repatriating its citizens caught in fraudulent activities abroad.

Focus on Cyber Scam Operations in Myanmar

The region of Myawaddy in Myanmar has gained notoriety for its cyber scam operations, which have reportedly been linked to extensive online fraud. International law enforcement agencies have identified compounds in this area as hubs for such illicit activities. Various reports suggest that these operations are controlled by Chinese criminal syndicates that collaborate with local armed groups associated with Myanmar’s military.

Misri’s statements underline that the exploitation of vulnerable individuals in such scams must be addressed with urgency, as these operations are not only a human rights concern but also pose significant security threats in the region. The MEA will continue its vigilance and advocacy for the safe return of all Indians at risk in these situations.

As discussions between the governments continue, the Indian authorities express their commitment to keeping the public informed about developing situations surrounding the individuals still believed to be trapped in Myanmar’s scam compounds. The ministry assures that it will spare no effort in its mission to repatriate Indian nationals safely.
