India and Myanmar Agree to Boost Trade Through Rupee-Kyat Mechanism and Infrastructure Cooperation

The CSR Journal Magazine

India and Myanmar have recently agreed to bolster their bilateral trade through the Rupee-Kyat settlement mechanism. This agreement was made during high-level discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing, which took place on June 1, 2023. Following their talks, a joint statement was issued that outlined the commitment to increase trade volume and cooperation in specific sectors.

Since the operationalisation of the Rupee-Kyat mechanism in May 2024, both nations have witnessed a steady growth in transaction volumes. The joint statement indicated that both sides are prioritising closer trade and investment partnerships, particularly in agro-processing, petroleum, energy, and mining sectors, while adhering to their national regulations.

This meeting is significant as it represents President Hlaing’s first international visit since taking office in April 2023. His visit to India, which stretches from May 30 to June 3, was initiated at Prime Minister Modi’s invitation and aims to strengthen bilateral relationships.

Focus on Connectivity and Infrastructure Projects

During discussions held at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi, connectivity emerged as a prominent topic. Prime Minister Modi underscored that enhanced connectivity between the two nations could lead to mutually beneficial economic relationships and regional prosperity. Both leaders discussed the urgency of completing key infrastructure projects, namely the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport project and the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway.

Myanmar has reportedly assured India of its commitment to reignite stalled projects affected by ongoing internal conflicts. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that these projects are priorities for both countries and noted the assurances given by President Hlaing to facilitate their completion.

The joint statement specified that discussions included various bilateral agreements and memoranda, with both sides eager to conclude these agreements swiftly. Prime Minister Modi reiterated the importance of strengthening infrastructural ties, which include trade, economic matters, defence, and cultural exchanges.

Diplomatic Engagements and Future Cooperation

In addition to the negotiations with Prime Minister Modi, President Hlaing met with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. During this meeting, President Murmu highlighted Myanmar’s strategic importance as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia. This sentiment underscores the shared commitment of both nations to foster deeper cooperation.

President Hlaing’s visit also featured engagements with key business leaders and institutions. He attended the India-Myanmar Business Conclave on May 31, where discussions centred on enhancing bilateral trade and exploring new commercial opportunities. Furthermore, he visited the NTPC Energy Technology Research Alliance (NETRA) complex to examine advancements in clean energy technologies.

Following his meetings in Delhi, President Hlaing is scheduled to continue his visit in Mumbai on June 2 and 3, where he is expected to engage with local business and political leaders. The involvement of a diverse business delegation indicates Myanmar’s intention to strengthen economic ties across various sectors including agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and IT.

In conclusion, this visit has not only reaffirmed the long-standing friendship between India and Myanmar but also demonstrated a mutual commitment to achieving shared goals for development and stability. The provision of enhanced scholarships for Myanmar students further signifies India’s dedication to educational cooperation.
