Hyderabad Hotels Resort to Firewood Cooking Amid LPG Shortage

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing shortage of LPG cylinders has compelled several hotels in Hyderabad to revert to traditional firewood stoves for cooking, significantly altering their menus. This situation has also led to an influx of migrant workers engaging in repairs of old pump stoves to address cooking needs, thereby boosting business at repair centers throughout the city.

The escalating global supply constraints of LPG, primarily driven by geopolitical tensions in West Asia, have led to increased challenges in availability. In response to the commercial gas cylinder deficit, many migrants are opting to fix pump stoves to ensure they can prepare meals. One migrant worker from Odisha, identified as Sanjay, noted the necessity of these repairs due to the ongoing gas shortage. He indicated that many individuals in their community are utilizing diesel to fuel these stoves, as kerosene is no longer accessible.

Sofiyan, a mechanic at Rama Store in Chikkadpally, shared insights on the uptick in repair requests for gas stoves. According to him, their shop has seen a significant rise in customers seeking stove repairs and gas supplies. He noted the critical situation faced by migrant workers who are unable to use wood stoves due to restrictions from landlords and highlighted the scarcity of spare parts for pump stoves. Given the financial constraints many face, the choice of repairing pump stoves becomes vital, especially as electric stoves remain out of reach for poorer individuals.

Gangagni Rao, a Chief Scientist at the Department of Energy and Environment with CSIR-IICT Hyderabad, shed light on the broader implications of this crisis. He emphasized the urgency for long-term alternatives in the face of the ongoing geopolitical tensions impacting LPG availability. Rao pointed out the importance of biogas solutions, citing the substantial amount of waste present in India that could be utilized for sustainable cooking options. He affirmed the need for adaptation in light of the current challenges surrounding LPG supply.

Another local business owner, Lakshman Rao, who runs SSV Food Hub in Visakhapatnam, has also faced similar difficulties. In response to the LPG shortage, he revealed that his establishment has switched to firewood cooking methods to mitigate dependence on gas. This adjustment has necessitated a reduction in their catering services, limiting the daily offerings at the hotel. Rao expressed that this shift allows them to better navigate the shortage while maintaining operations during these trying times.

The ongoing shortage of commercial LPG cylinders has prompted the Central Government to invoke the Essential Commodities Act, prioritizing LPG supplies for domestic consumers. In light of these events, earlier statements from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas reassured the public about sufficient availability of petrol and diesel across the country. However, the government recognizes the LPG situation as a critical concern that requires ongoing attention and action.
