The recent escalation in military activity has been marked by Yemen’s Houthi rebels launching missiles and drones targeted at Saudi Arabia. This action occurred in response to Saudi airstrikes on Hodeida, a strategic city situated along the Red Sea, heightening tensions surrounding crucial maritime routes in the Middle East. The conflict has intensified amidst ongoing competition between the United States and Iran for control over the Strait of Hormuz.

Brigadier General Yahya Saree, a military spokesman for the Houthis, announced that the missiles aimed at facilities operated by Aramco, specifically in the Red Sea cities of Yanbu and Jizan. Saudi Arabia’s civil defence reported multiple alerts in these locations early on Saturday, although no further statements were issued by the kingdom regarding the attacks.

Impact on Global Trade Routes

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, located at the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, is a critical maritime chokepoint connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. Approximately twelve per cent of global trade, including a significant portion of container traffic, transits through this strait. The Houthis have threatened to close this vital shipping route in retaliation for the blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia and recent military activities in Yemen.

Mahdi al-Mashat, the head of the Houthi-led Supreme Political Council, asserted that the only means to de-escalate the situation would be to end the blockade and halt what he described as aggression. He stated that any other efforts would be deemed ineffective. The recent hostilities included Houthi strikes on Saudi oil tankers earlier in the week, which prompted retaliatory actions from the Saudi-led coalition targeting Hodeida.

A spokesperson for the Houthi-run health ministry reported that strikes conducted late on Friday night impacted both the port and a telecommunications corporation, resulting in injuries to several individuals. In contrast, the Saudi-led coalition claimed their attacks focused on military targets perceived to pose threats to commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

Diplomatic Efforts Amidst Military Tensions

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, advocated for diplomatic means to resolve the ongoing conflict in Yemen, urging against military confrontations. His comments came following an interview published in a state-run newspaper. Iran has also reported no overnight military strikes within its territory, with officials asserting that the country experienced a ‘peaceful night’ amidst ongoing tensions in the region.

Meanwhile, amid the backdrop of escalating violence, Iran’s foreign ministry condemned an alleged attack by Ukrainian forces on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, resulting in casualties. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that Ukraine had made substantial gains with its military actions in the Caspian Sea.
