‘Hezbollah Victimising People’: Marco Rubio Says Talks Underway Between Lebanon and Israel

The CSR Journal Magazine

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed on May 25 that discussions are ongoing between Lebanon and Israel, highlighting concerns regarding Hezbollah’s actions. Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Rubio described Hezbollah as an entity that not only victimises the Lebanese populace but also operates as an Iranian proxy.

Rubio provided insights into the current situation, noting that there is a 45-day ceasefire in place. He mentioned that weekly meetings and daily engagements are being conducted between the governments of Lebanon and Israel as part of these discussions. However, he pointed out that the real issue lies with Hezbollah and not merely between Lebanon and Israel.

In response to a question about Lebanon’s potential involvement in ongoing discussions, Rubio stressed that negotiations were being handled separately for Lebanon. He referred to recent statements made by Hezbollah, including a declaration calling for the overthrow of the Lebanese government, which emphasised the complexities of the situation and highlighted Hezbollah’s role as a proxy for Iran.

US Support for Israel’s Right to Self-Defence

Rubio reiterated that the United States remains committed to supporting both the Lebanese and Israeli governments. He affirmed Israel’s right to self-defence, especially in the event of missile launches from Hezbollah. He stated that should Hezbollah engage in such actions, Israel has the justified right to respond or take preventive measures.

Highlighting the ongoing tensions, Rubio’s comments come at a time when military actions in the region are under scrutiny. Israel’s response to any attacks from militant groups like Hezbollah is considered not only a matter of national security but also a crucial point of international policy.

A report from the Jerusalem Post detailed further developments in the situation, citing Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi’s communication with Hezbollah Chief Naim Qassem. Araghchi assured Qassem of continued financial and logistical support for Hezbollah, signalling ongoing Iranian backing of the group in defiance of international pressures.

Future Prospects for Peace in the Region

As the situation evolves, both the US and Israel seek to establish a more stable environment in Lebanon. However, Rubio cautioned that achieving lasting peace will be challenging as long as Hezbollah remains armed and active. He articulated a clear stance on the implications of such armed groups on Lebanon’s future.

Araghchi also addressed the notion of a ceasefire, indicating that it is a significant component of any potential negotiations with the United States. He underscored Iran’s unwavering support for movements advocating for rights and freedom, underlining the geopolitical complexities involving foreign influences in Lebanon.

The current developments underline the intricate dynamics between regional powers, local governance, and militant organisations. With ongoing negotiations and presentations of support, the focus on Hezbollah’s role remains critical for both US involvement and regional stability.
