Heavy Rains Lash Maharashtra: Orange Alert for Konkan and Ghat Regions

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for the next 24 hours in several districts of Maharashtra, including Ratnagiri, Pune Ghat, Satara Ghat, Kolhapur Ghat, and Sindhudurg, following heavy and sustained rainfall across the state.

Mumbai Suburban records highest rainfall

According to the State Emergency Operations Centre, Mumbai Suburban district recorded the highest rainfall in the past 24 hours with 83.4 mm, followed by Thane (73.7 mm), Mumbai City (62.9 mm), Raigad (54.1 mm), and Palghar (49.7 mm). In contrast, lighter rainfall was reported in districts like Pune (11.9 mm), Satara (19.7 mm), and Kolhapur (17.8 mm).

A breakdown of other rainfall figures across the state (in mm) includes: Ratnagiri – 47.7, Sindhudurg – 12.7, Nashik – 7.7, Dhule – 7.1, Nandurbar – 4, Jalgaon – 6.7, Solapur – 0.9, Sangli – 6, Aurangabad – 0.6, Nagpur – 0.9, and Yavatmal – 8.7.

Residents alerted

Concerns have risen in Ratnagiri as the Jagbudi River has reached warning levels, prompting local authorities to alert residents and initiate safety measures.

Several incidents of infrastructure damage and casualties have also been reported. On the Mumbai-Goa highway, cracks have appeared near Walanjwadi in Khed Taluka, disrupting traffic flow, which is now restricted to a single lane. In Satara district, an alternate route on the Patan-Chiplun National Highway has collapsed due to flooding, and vehicular movement has been redirected through Nerale-Manegaon-Maneri-Chafer-Sangamnagar route to Koynanagar.

Casualties reported

Tragic incidents have been reported in the Mumbai Suburban district where one person drowned, another died under a mudslide, and several others were injured due to falling trees, collapsed slabs, and wall collapses. In Yavatmal, a person drowned, while in Dhule, four animals were killed after a wall collapsed.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge citizens in affected areas to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety advisories.
