The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has officially declared the historic Gollala Gudi Temple located at Palampet in the Mulugu district of Telangana as a Monument of National Importance. This information was shared by the Ministry of Culture through a post on X, outlining the temple’s significance in the context of Indian heritage preservation.

Architectural Significance Of The Temple

The Gollala Gudi Temple, dating back to the Kakatiya era, is part of a Trikutalaya structure, characterised by an east-facing mandapa encircled by three garbhagrihas. It is situated in close proximity to the UNESCO-listed Ramappa Temple, adding to its historical and cultural relevance. The temple is particularly lauded for its intricate carvings and rich architectural details that reflect the artistry of the period.

Among its notable features are a parapet adorned with elaborate sculptures and a series of meticulously crafted hamsas found along the entablature and doorways. These artistic elements, alongside the jali work, are indicative of the temple’s unique architectural style and heritage.

In the front of the main structure, two detached shrines exhibit detailed carvings, enhanced by figures of dvarapalas. Each of these shrines includes antechambers that are tastefully decorated with finely crafted cornices and screens, demonstrating the attention to detail that characterises Kakatiya architecture.

Formal Declaration Process

According to a notification dated August 31, 2026, the Central Government made the formal announcement to recognise the ancient monument’s new status under sub-section (3) of Section 4 of the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1958. The specific notification number is S.O. 4802(E).

Prior to this declaration, the government published a notice on March 6, 2026, expressing its intention to declare the Gollala Gudi Temple as a monument of national importance. This earlier notice was communicated through the Gazette of India, and a public notice was displayed prominently at the site, in accordance with the requirements set out in sub-section (1) of Section 4 of the aforementioned Act.

Following the publication of the initial notification, the Ministry of Culture reported that no objections were received from the public regarding the proposed recognition. This feedback allowed the Central Government to proceed with the official declaration, thereby recognising the monument as a site of national cultural significance.
