Heavy Rain Disrupts Flights and Trains Across Southern Bangladesh

The CSR Journal Magazine

Heavy rainfall in southern Bangladesh has led to significant disruptions in both train and flight services. Tourists were reportedly stranded on a train route from Cox’s Bazar to Dhaka as parts of the railway line have been submerged under water, making travel impossible. The situation was particularly dire for those on a tourist train that became immobilised in the Chattogram city area, affecting around 600 passengers. The ordeal began around 1 p.m. and has left many in challenging circumstances.

Rail services have been effectively halted due to the flooding, with reports indicating that the railway line from Chattogram to Cox’s Bazar is under at least two feet of water. This severe weather has not only affected the mobility of tourists but has also raised concerns regarding their safety in the area.

Officials have indicated that they are working on solutions, but until conditions improve, train operations remain suspended. The government has urged passengers and tourists to remain cautious and be prepared for ongoing disturbances in services.

Flight Disruptions at Shah Amanat International Airport

At Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram, at least three flights were unable to land due to the adverse weather conditions. These flights were redirected to the capital city, Dhaka, causing considerable inconvenience to passengers. Additionally, flights departing from Dhaka to Chattogram were also grounded, resulting in substantial delays across the board.

The disruptions have affected many individuals, not only locals but also international travellers who rely on air connectivity for their journeys. Reports emerging from the airport indicate that operations may remain erratic until weather conditions stabilise, with authorities closely monitoring the situation.

The airport’s management has emphasised that they are prioritising passenger safety and will resume operations only once conditions clearly improve. Passengers travelling through Shah Amanat International Airport have been advised to stay updated with their respective airlines for further information regarding their flights.

Government Imposes Restrictions in Bandarban District

In response to the flooding and risks associated with heavy rainfall in Bandarban, the district administration has placed a prohibition on all tourist activities. This measure takes effect immediately and is set to last until at least July 10, 2026. Authorities have cited potential risks resulting from continuous rainfall, particularly concerning communication systems in various locations throughout the district.

The directive aims to safeguard both tourists and the general public from various hazards, including landslides and flooding in tourist hotspots. Official notices have encouraged compliance with these restrictions and highlighted the importance of adhering to safety measures during this critical period.

The district administration has advised tourists to remain attentive to weather updates and to refrain from travelling to areas deemed risky. This includes tourist centres, waterfalls, hiking trails, and other outdoor attractions that may pose dangers due to the current environmental conditions.
