“Head of Goons”: BJP MLA Arijit Roy Attacks Abhishek Banerjee, Declaring TMC is ‘Finished’

The CSR Journal Magazine

BJP MLA Arijit Roy has publicly referred to Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee as the “head of all goons in Bengal,” following a decision by the Calcutta High Court on June 25 which denied Banerjee’s request for permission to travel abroad for medical reasons. In his remarks to the media, Roy suggested that this ruling marks the beginning of a serious decline for Banerjee and indicated that he believes Banerjee may soon face incarceration.

Roy expressed that the people of Bengal are aware of alleged corruption associated with Banerjee, asserting that his party’s investigation into these matters will be thorough. “His countdown has begun,” Roy stated, implying that Banerjee’s legal troubles are imminent and extensive.

Current Legal Challenges Facing Banerjee

Abhishek Banerjee is reportedly entangled in multiple investigations, particularly concerning the West Bengal primary teachers’ recruitment scam. Additionally, he is involved in a defamation case in Madhya Pradesh, compounding his current legal issues. The BJP MLA’s comments come as Banerjee’s legal troubles intensify, potentially affecting his political career.

Roy further characterised TMC’s situation as dire, claiming that the party is in a state of collapse due to internal strife and a perceived lack of effective policies. He implied that even after being in power for 15 years, TMC’s governance has not met the expectations of the electorate, stating that “if a party doesn’t have policy or principles, despite being in power, it meets this fate.” The BJP MLA suggested the decline of TMC is accelerating faster than expected.

Roy’s remarks come amid significant turmoil within TMC, signalling a shift in the party’s dynamics and leadership. This context raises questions about the future direction of the party and its ability to recover from its current challenges.

TMC Leadership Crisis and Internal Strife

Within TMC, tensions have escalated as a group led by Leader of Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee has initiated a revolt, announcing a new leadership structure that includes senior MLA Arup Roy as party chairperson. This rebel faction claims to represent a substantial portion of TMC legislators, whom they assert support their claims of being the “real TMC.” A 30-member National Working Committee was also formed, appointing several key party figures to influential positions.

In response to this faction’s actions, Mamata Banerjee’s camp has taken steps to re-establish her authority, issuing show-cause notices to multiple senior leaders accused of engaging in anti-party activities. Among those receiving notices were notable figures such as Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas, and Javed Khan. Following this, all eight leaders were expelled from TMC, signalling an escalating internal conflict within the ranks of the party.

Mamata Banerjee has intensified her efforts to consolidate power by submitting an updated list of office-bearers to the Election Commission, reinforcing her position as chairperson. This move indicates her determination to maintain control over the party amidst growing fragmentation. The struggle for leadership within TMC reflects broader challenges as the party navigates its current political landscape.
