Guwahati Airport’s New Terminal Begins Operations, Boosting Annual Capacity to 13.1 Million Passengers

The CSR Journal Magazine

The new terminal at Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati commenced commercial operations on Sunday evening, significantly enhancing the total annual passenger capacity to 13.1 million. This development solidifies Guwahati’s role as a key aviation hub for India’s North-Eastern region, facilitating connections to South and Southeast Asia. The terminal’s operationalization was part of a phased strategy that included rigorous trials in various operational aspects such as check-in procedures, baggage handling, security checks, and aircraft turnaround before full-fledged services began.

Inauguration Event Attended by Key Officials

The terminal was officially inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20, 2025. The commencement ceremony was attended by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd, which is the largest private airport operator in India. The event coincided with the issuance of a ceremonial boarding pass to the first passenger departing from the new facility, and an Akasa Air flight arriving from Mumbai marked its operational debut. In addition, cultural performances reflecting the region’s diverse heritage were showcased in the arrivals courtyard, highlighting contributions from artisan communities, tea garden workers, and frontline security personnel.

Statements Highlighting Regional Development Goals

During the event, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to Gautam Adani for his commitment to invest Rs 50,000 crore announced during the Advantage Assam 2.0 event last year. Sarma emphasized that the new terminal would significantly boost tourism and serve as a transformative asset for the state. He also noted that the terminal’s construction honored Assam’s cultural identity, which he felt justifiably proud of as an Assamese individual. Jeet Adani remarked that the expansion resonates with the increasing demand in the region and aligns with the vision of future-ready infrastructure advocated by the Prime Minister, along with the goal of positioning Assam as the economic engine for the North-East.

Guwahati Airport’s Growing Significance

Guwahati Airport has seen consistent traffic growth over the past decade, emerging as one of the fastest growing non-metro airports in India. Recent reports indicate that passenger throughput has surpassed nine million, ranking the airport among the top 10 to 12 busiest in the country by passenger volume. The elevated capacity of 13.1 million will allow for increased route options, expanded flight frequencies, and growth in international connectivity.

Operational Features and Infrastructure Design

The airport currently serves 21 domestic destinations and three international routes, which include Bangkok, Paro, and Singapore. It manages over 130 aircraft traffic movements daily. The additional capacity aims to fortify Guwahati’s position as a regional hub, enhancing connectivity to mainland India and Southeast Asia. Comprehensive validation exercises on operations have been performed, with improvements in airline coordination, ground handling protocols, and digital systems now in place. The airport also features a staged rollout of retail and food service options.

Cultural and Architectural Significance

The terminal’s design, devised by renowned Indian architect Nuru Karim, is inspired by local elements such as the kopou phool, or foxtail orchid, and incorporates over 140 metric tonnes of bamboo. Architectural nods to Assam’s traditional bamboo craftsmanship, particularly associated with the Apatani community in Arunachal Pradesh, reflect the cultural fabric of the North-East. The design notably includes a vaulted roof that allows ample natural light and an amphitheater-style forecourt that introduces travelers to regional artistic traditions. The terminal has been recognized with the International Architecture Award 2025 for its successful integration of regional identity with modern infrastructure. The airport is operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd through its subsidiary, Guwahati International Airport Limited, which also manages several other airports across the country.
