Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced recent funding and development plans during his visit to Guwahati Science City in Sonapur, Kamrup (Metro) district. This visit was aimed at inspecting the current construction and assessing the ongoing progress at the site. Sarma held a review meeting with departmental authorities on August 11, aiming to evaluate the next phase of works for the Science City.

The construction project spans over 150 bighas of land, with several new features being developed since its formal inauguration five months ago. Sarma expressed optimism that the entire project would be completed by March 2027.

Details of Financial Support and Development Plans

During the media interaction, Chief Minister Sarma revealed that the Assam Government would allocate an additional Rs 100 crore to enhance the appeal of Guwahati Science City. This funding will support various developmental initiatives, including a digital panorama, a convention centre, and a musical fountain. Further plans also involve establishing parking facilities and other related infrastructure to improve accessibility for visitors.

The project represents a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture of the Government of India and the Department of Science and Technology of Assam. Sarma noted that, upon completion, Guwahati Science City is expected to rank among the premier science centres in the country.

To encourage greater public engagement, particularly from students, the Chief Minister urged individuals of all ages to visit the site. He hinted at plans for a dedicated bus service by the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) connecting Guwahati to the Science City, with a decision to be announced soon.

Assessment of Zubeen Khetra Development

In addition to the Science City inspection, Chief Minister Sarma visited ‘Zubeen Khetra’ in Komarkuchi, Sonapur. This site is dedicated to the renowned singer and artist Zubeen Garg. Sarma took the opportunity to review the ongoing construction work at the memorial site and engage with officials from the Public Works Department and the project’s architect.

The Chief Minister issued directives for the timely completion of the boundary wall surrounding the premises. This step is essential to facilitate the next phase of development, which includes the construction of an open-air theatre and landscaping of the site.

During his visit to both sites, Sarma was accompanied by various ministers, including Keshab Mahanta, the Minister for Science and Technology, Pijush Hazarika, the Minister for Agriculture, and Kaushik Rai, the Minister for Food, Public Distribution, and Consumer Affairs, alongside senior government officials. The collective effort aims to ensure that the projects not only progress swiftly but also meet the expected standards upon completion.
