Gurugram Mandates Pet Dog Registration and Enhances Owner Regulations

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gurugram has made the registration of pet dogs compulsory in a bid to address increasing dog bite incidents and enhance public safety. The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has implemented this requirement with immediate effect, under the directives of Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya. Dog owners are now obliged to register their pets, failing which they may face legal consequences.

The new registration process allows pet owners to register their dogs either through the MCG’s online portal or by visiting designated Citizen Facilitation Centres (CFCs). To complete the registration, individuals will need to provide specific documents including identity proof, a recent photograph of the dog, and a valid rabies vaccination certificate. It is important to note that this registration will not be a one-time affair, as dog owners must renew it periodically to ensure compliance.

Guidelines for Responsible Dog Ownership in Public Spaces

The MCG has introduced stringent guidelines for taking pet dogs into public areas. Under these new regulations, leaving dogs unattended in public spaces such as roads, parks, or markets is explicitly prohibited. Pet owners must ensure their dogs are always on a leash when outside their homes. This measure is designed to mitigate risks and ensure the safety of both pets and the public.

Furthermore, pet owners will be held accountable for cleaning up after their dogs in public settings. The MCG has also mandated that all pet owners keep their dogs up to date with vaccinations, including rabies shots. In cases where a dog causes fear, injury, or attacks a person, the owner will be deemed legally responsible for the incident.

The measures taken are part of a broader initiative to maintain public safety while promoting responsible pet ownership in Gurugram. The civic body emphasises the importance of these regulations in fostering a harmonious environment between pets and the community.

Additional Regulations for Aggressive Dog Breeds

In light of concerns regarding aggressive dog breeds, the MCG has put in place additional restrictions specifically for breeds classified as dangerous. This includes breeds such as the Pitbull Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Cane Corso, Akita, and various Mastiff types. Owners of these breeds are now required to ensure that their dogs wear both a muzzle and a leash when taken out in public.

The restrictions aim to prevent potential incidents involving these dogs and to safeguard public well-being. The incorporation of these rules stresses the responsibility dog owners have in managing potentially hazardous situations effectively.

By implementing these comprehensive regulations, the MCG aims to strike a balance between dog ownership and ensuring public safety, whilst promoting responsible handling of animals throughout the city. The push for registration, vaccination, and adherence to public safety norms reflects a commitment to maintaining a harmonious coexistence between pets and the community.
