Google and Samsung have announced their partnership for the development of a new line of smart glasses. The announcement came during Google I/O 2026, showcasing designs that combine cutting-edge technology with style. These glasses have been developed in collaboration with Gentle Monster, a luxury eyewear brand based in Korea, and Warby Parker, a well-known American eyewear company.

Distinct Designs for Diverse Users

The smart glasses will be available in two unique designs tailored to cater to different consumer preferences. The Gentle Monster version features a premium, fashion-forward aesthetic, aiming at users who prioritise style. In contrast, the Warby Parker variant offers a traditional look that aligns more closely with everyday eyewear, targeting mainstream users who seek functionality without compromising on appearance.

Both designs aim to resonate with a broad audience, appealing to trend-conscious consumers as well as those looking for practical applications. Unlike the more obviously futuristic XR headsets available on the market, the new smart glasses are designed to resemble typical eyewear, encouraging adoption among users who may be hesitant to wear visibly advanced technology.

Google has emphasised that these products should be classified as “audio glasses” rather than augmented reality (AR) glasses since they do not feature built-in displays within the lenses.

Features Powered by Gemini AI

The Google and Samsung smart glasses are equipped with the Gemini AI assistant, enabling a myriad of interactive features. Users will be able to engage with the device by asking questions about local surroundings, exploring restaurant reviews, receiving turn-by-turn navigation, and translating conversations in real time. This level of voice interaction is akin to that seen in Meta’s Ray-Ban Smart Glasses.

In addition to voice commands, the smart glasses can translate written text, proving beneficial for communication while travelling abroad. These glasses also come equipped with built-in speakers, microphones, and cameras, allowing users to capture images and videos, listen to music, and receive notifications seamlessly.

During the launch event, Google illustrated various hands-free applications powered by Gemini AI, including cooking assistance and contextual search capabilities. This signified a new era of utilisation, merging everyday tasks with advanced technology.

Smart Glasses as Companion Devices

Samsung has noted that the new smart glasses are designed to complement smartphones rather than replace them. Intended as companion devices, they will use wireless technology, such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, to connect with smartphones for processing and app-related functions. This integration ensures that the user experience remains smooth and interconnected, leveraging the capabilities of smartphones.

The Android XR platform will underpin the software experience of the smart glasses, while Samsung will oversee the hardware components. This partnership between the two companies signals a concerted effort to innovate within the wearable technology sector.

Furthermore, Google has highlighted new AI-based image editing features through a tool named Nano Banana, which is capable of editing or regenerating images captured by the smart glasses based on AI prompts. This addition can enhance user creativity and streamline content sharing.
