Gold Prices Steady at Rs 1.43 Lakh per 10 Grams Ahead of Festive Season

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gold prices are currently stabilising around Rs 1.43 lakh per 10 grams, providing some relief to consumers preparing for Karwa Chauth, Diwali, and the wedding season. As the festive period approaches, many households are contemplating whether to purchase gold now or wait for potential price drops. At present, the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) reports gold trading at Rs 1,42,674, reflecting a slight increase of 0.46%.

This week is pivotal for gold prices, as several external factors could impact market movements. Rising crude oil prices and an impending policy announcement from the US Federal Reserve may influence future trends. Persistent inflation concerns could restrict the likelihood of interest rate reductions, which in turn would keep bond yields and the US dollar strong, potentially exerting downward pressure on gold prices.

Despite the recent price stability, the outlook remains uncertain. Market participants are closely monitoring developments in both the oil sector and the Federal Reserve’s communications to gauge the future trajectory of gold prices.

Factors Influencing Gold Prices

Investors are particularly attentive to fluctuations in the oil market and indications from the US Federal Reserve, as these elements could dictate gold’s future. Higher crude oil prices often lead to increased inflation expectations. If inflation persists, the Federal Reserve may find itself with limited options for cutting interest rates. Elevated interest rates typically make interest-bearing assets more appealing than gold, which does not yield regular income.

Conversely, gold prices may receive support from central bank purchases, investment demand, and concerns regarding government finances. These factors can help maintain price stability, even amid economic uncertainty. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that gold is currently trading within a narrow range, attempting to stabilise after recent declines.

Market analysts suggest that the relationship between crude oil and gold is complex. While both commodities can rise during periods of geopolitical instability, higher oil prices can also trigger inflation concerns, impacting gold negatively. Manav Modi, a commodities analyst, highlighted that sustained high oil prices could lead to increased inflation expectations and tighter monetary policy, which may weigh on gold prices.

Considerations for Buyers Ahead of Diwali

For households planning to purchase jewellery for upcoming festivals or weddings, timing is crucial. A period of relative price stability can facilitate budgeting, but it does not guarantee that gold has reached its lowest price point. Market sentiment can significantly influence gold prices, particularly before major events.

Modi emphasised that various factors, including ETF flows and central bank buying, are keeping market participants cautious. Buyers should be aware that waiting for a significant price correction may not always be beneficial, especially when purchases are tied to specific occasions. Prices could decline if the dollar strengthens, but increased investment demand or new uncertainties could drive them higher.

It is important for buyers to note that the MCX price does not reflect the final cost at jewellery stores. Additional charges, such as making fees, taxes, and purity levels, will affect the total expense.
