A recent building collapse in Gaza City has resulted in the deaths of at least 21 individuals, among whom are 11 children. The incident occurred on Wednesday, affecting a structure that was providing shelter to displaced Palestinian families. The collapse occurred against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts and has raised concerns over building safety in the region.

The building had previously sustained damage from an Israeli airstrike during the ongoing war. According to Zaher al-Wahidi, a spokesperson for the Gaza Health Ministry, a further 14 individuals have been reported injured as a consequence of the collapse. As investigations into the causes of the incident continue, experts express growing concern over the structural integrity of buildings in Gaza, many of which have been severely affected during recent conflicts.

This incident highlights the risks associated with the deteriorating infrastructural conditions in the region, where rebuilding efforts have stalled since a ceasefire was achieved nearly one year ago. Israel has stated a reluctance to permit reconstruction until Hamas disarms, complicating the humanitarian situation for many families who are already displaced.

Saudi Arabia Intercepts Drone Threat

On the same day, Saudi Arabia announced the interception and destruction of a drone that was reportedly targeting the airspace over Mecca. The military spokesperson for Saudi forces, Major General Turki al-Malki, confirmed that the drone was downed on Tuesday evening before it could breach the airspace of Islam’s holiest city.

Al-Malki stressed the importance of Mecca’s security, labelling it as “a red line” for the nation. He reinforced the message that Saudi forces are prepared to respond decisively to “hostile and terrorist behaviour.” The country has attributed the drone’s origin to Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group, which has categorically denied the allegations, stirring considerable controversy throughout the Islamic world.

Mecca, recognised as the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad and home to the revered Kaaba, serves as a focal point for millions of Muslims globally. The drone incident underscores the heightened security challenges facing Saudi Arabia amid a landscape of regional tensions.

Impact on Energy and Protests in Syria

Amidst these events, oil flow through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz has shown signs of partial recovery, with estimates suggesting movement of between 5 million to 7 million barrels per day, compared to 15 million barrels before the escalation of conflict on February 28. Tankers are reportedly employing a southern route close to Oman, guided by US forces, to navigate these troubled waters.

However, troubles persist as Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline was damaged in a drone attack last week. This damage is anticipated to hinder Saudi oil exports from the Red Sea port of Yanbu by approximately 2.5 million to 2.7 million barrels a day, with repair efforts expected to extend over several weeks.

In a separate but related situation, protests erupted in northeastern Syria, where demonstrators blocked a main highway near Tal Tamr, leaving numerous oil trucks stranded. This civil unrest followed a government announcement on Sunday regarding an increase in fuel prices, attributed to rising global oil costs due to the US-Iran conflict and necessary repairs to the Baniyas refinery. The region, producing roughly 100,000 barrels of oil daily, faces significant challenges against a domestic demand of 325,000 barrels, necessitating imports to meet shortages.
