Asif Ali, the primary suspect in the death of Nimisha Thakuria, a 22-year-old student at Gauhati University, was injured following an attempt to flee from police custody. This incident took place in Guwahati early on Tuesday, shortly before he was due to be presented in court. His capture took place after an investigation into Thakuria’s death, which has garnered significant media attention.

Hospital Admission and Medical Condition

Ali was transferred to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) at approximately 5.35 am, where medical staff identified two bullet wounds to his right leg. The hospital superintendent, Dr Devajit Choudhury, reported that while Ali suffered injuries to his ankle, he was otherwise stable. The nature of his injuries, involving both the joint and bone, necessitated further medical intervention.

Upon examination in the casualty department, doctors implemented necessary procedures, which included applying a plaster cast. The injuries consisted of one bullet entering from the rear and exiting from the front, while the other bullet travelled from the outer side towards the inner side of the ankle. These details have been instrumental in understanding the severity of his condition, and he is currently receiving treatment under the hospital’s Orthopaedics Department.

The incident has labelled Ali’s actions as an escape bid, leading to police responses involving the use of firearms. As the allegations surrounding Thakuria’s death evolve, this development adds another layer to the ongoing investigation. Authorities continue to monitor Ali’s condition closely as he recovers from his injuries.
