Ex-Bangladesh Air Force Officer Linked To Hasina’s Fleeing Clip Found Dead

The CSR Journal Magazine

A former officer of the Bangladesh Air Force, KM Tahsif Souri, was discovered deceased in a river in Dhaka on Thursday, following his disappearance the previous day. The 28-year-old was reportedly involved in recording a video that showed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina leaving Bangladesh on August 5, 2024.

River police retrieved Souri’s body from the Tongi Bandar Ghat area after receiving a call via the national emergency helpline 999. His remains were subsequently sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy. The identification of Souri was confirmed through his mobile phone and wristwatch, which were found alongside his body.

Reports from Prothom Alo indicate that he resided with his family in Sector 18 of Uttara. Authorities have stated that the cause of death remains undetermined at this time. Although initial suspicions point to drowning, officials have indicated that the postmortem report will provide further clarity on the matter.

Family’s Concerns

K.M. Enayetul Karim Helal, Souri’s father, expressed uncertainty regarding the circumstances surrounding his son’s death. In an interview with Jago News, he mentioned that Souri had occasionally voiced concerns about his safety. “Tahsif would sometimes tell me that he was feeling a little apprehensive.

But he never disclosed what he was worried about,” Helal stated. He added that Souri had been dismissed from the Air Force on disciplinary grounds and had subsequently held positions at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Netra News, and most recently, Virgo Tobacco.

Helal recounted the events leading up to Souri’s disappearance, stating, “Before evening, one of his junior friends came to call him from downstairs. Tahsif told his mother, ‘Dip is here. I’ll go and talk to him.’ He went downstairs but never returned home.” This account has raised questions about the circumstances of his last moments.

Connection to Political Events

Souri’s reported involvement in recording the video of Sheikh Hasina’s departure has drawn significant attention to his untimely death. On August 5, 2024, Hasina reportedly fled Dhaka amidst widespread protests that led to the collapse of her government. She is said to have left the country via military helicopter before boarding a Bangladesh Air Force C-130J Hercules aircraft, which subsequently flew to India’s Hindon airbase in Ghaziabad.

Since then, Hasina has remained in exile in India, asserting her intention to return to Bangladesh. Despite the speculation surrounding Souri’s death and its potential links to the political turmoil, police have not established any direct connection between his demise and the video he allegedly recorded. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are expected to release more information following the completion of the autopsy.

The situation continues to develop, with both the local community and national observers closely monitoring the investigation into Souri’s death. As the story unfolds, further details may emerge that could clarify the circumstances surrounding this case and its implications in the broader context of Bangladesh’s political landscape.
