Assam Revives Dibrugarh Cargo Vessel Service After Decades

The CSR Journal Magazine

Assam has reinstated a long-dormant inland water transport service with the departure of MV Patkai from Dibrugarh to Bangladesh. This significant event marks the first instance since India’s Independence that a cargo vessel has traversed from Dibrugarh to an international location. The vessel was officially flagged off by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday at the newly constructed Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) Bogibeel River Port.

MV Patkai is en route to Pangaon Port in Dhaka, carrying a total of 540 tonnes of methanol produced by Assam Petro-Chemicals Limited. The methanol is being transported in twenty-seven containers, and the vessel is expected to navigate approximately 783 kilometres via river routes. The entire journey is projected to last around seven days, and another vessel is set to depart within the following days.

The revival of these operations marks a significant enhancement in trade routes and connectivity for Assam, re-establishing a history of inland water transport which had largely ceased following the British era. Previously, vessels regularly operated from Dibrugarh for commercial purposes, primarily serving the Mohanaghat area.

Enhancement of Trade and Connectivity

The reintroduction of the cargo service is anticipated to greatly enhance Assam’s logistics and trade relations, especially with Bangladesh. The transportation of methanol along this route signifies a renewed focus on utilising the state’s waterways for international cargo transport. This development is expected to bolster regional trade and create new opportunities for economic growth.

Several dignitaries attended the inauguration ceremony, including various ministers, Members of Parliament, Members of the Legislative Assembly, and senior government officials. The presence of key figures such as Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Assam Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain highlighted the significance of this initiative in enhancing the state’s commercial transport capabilities.

As a part of the inaugural proceedings, discussions surrounding the benefits of revitalising Assam’s river routes were held. These discussions included the advantages of lower transportation costs and increased efficiency in moving goods by water, which can create a more competitive trade environment for the state.

Future Prospects for Inland Water Transport

The successful launch of the MV Patkai sets a precedent for future cargo vessel services in Assam, indicating a strategic shift towards bolstering the use of inland waterways. This initiative aligns with national efforts to promote sustainable modes of transportation, thereby reducing reliance on road and rail for freight transport.

Officials expressed optimism about the impact of this revival on local economies, citing the potential for increased export opportunities and the development of ancillary industries related to logistics and transportation. Moreover, the upgraded infrastructure associated with IWAI aims to accommodate more vessels and larger cargo loads in the future, facilitating enhanced trade volumes.

Overall, the revival of the cargo service represents a significant milestone for Assam, with its implications likely to be felt across various sectors. With further investments and improvements, the region’s inland waterways may play a crucial role in shaping its economic landscape in the coming years.
