Former Indian Volleyball Captain Honored by IOC for Promoting Gender Equality

The CSR Journal Magazine

Abhijit Bhattacharya, ex-captain of India’s men’s national volleyball team, has created significant opportunities for thousands of children in rural Assam through the sport of volleyball. His initiative, the Brahmaputra Volleyball League (BVL), has successfully involved around 12,000 boys and girls in organized sports over the past six years. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recognized his outstanding contributions by awarding him the Global Winner of the 2025 Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (GEDI) Champions Award. This accolade honors his efforts in establishing grassroots sports programs that promote equal opportunities for both genders in rural areas.

Foundations of the Brahmaputra Volleyball League

Battacharya initiated his community-focused efforts in 2019 through the Assam Volleyball Mission 100 (AVM100), beginning by distributing volleyballs to children in tea garden regions. The initiative quickly transformed into establishing village clubs, leading to the formation of the BVL. Initially starting with 50 teams across 34 villages, the league has expanded to comprise over 400 teams from 158 villages throughout 28 of Assam’s 31 districts. The BVL now conducts year-round training sessions and organizes numerous matches for both under-12 and under-16 categories.

Community Engagement and Local Support

The league’s structure allows matches to be held locally, minimizing travel for participants, particularly for girls who are often experiencing organized sports for the first time. In communities such as Majar Char, which frequently faces flooding, local villagers actively prepare venues and host celebrations during events. With traditional food and cultural displays like Bihu dance, these gatherings foster a strong community spirit. The BVL has significantly influenced local habits, encouraging teenagers to prioritize sports over negative practices. Approximately 90% of athletes in the state’s sub-junior and mini-state teams originate from the league, showcasing its effectiveness.

Gender Equality in Sport

A distinctive feature of Bhattacharya’s initiative is the requirement for equal participation of girls in every village team registered under the BVL. To address safety and hygiene concerns for female players, training for coaches, both men and women, includes topics like menstrual hygiene management, effectively reducing dropout rates among young girls. Additionally, former BVL participants are encouraged to enter coaching and officiating roles, bolstering sports leadership in the community.

International Recognition and Support

The Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) has commended the BVL model, providing coaching courses that helped 45 community coaches, especially women from remote areas, acquire international credentials. In late 2023, notable Olympic gold medallists and international experts were brought in to train a new cohort of coaches, further validating the initiative’s international standing. Bhattacharya expressed his deep emotion upon receiving the award, viewing it as a tribute to every volunteer, supportive parent, and young girl who dares to believe in her place on the volleyball court.

Empowerment Through Sports

Bhattacharya emphasized that the recognition reflects not just individual achievement but highlights the progress of young girls in sports, with teams from Assam making history by reaching the quarterfinals in the Junior National Championship. Off the court, BVL participants serve as advocates for child rights and environmental issues, illustrating how sports can foster confidence and resilience among youth, particularly girls. His work exemplifies a successful model that can be adapted across India for empowering communities through sports.
