On Thursday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay revealed an extensive redevelopment plan for Chennai, which includes the establishment of a new Secretariat-cum-Legislative Assembly complex. This development is expected to cost Rs 1,200 crore and will contribute to a built-up area of 20 lakh square feet.

The proposed complex aims to consolidate all state government departments onto a single administrative campus, thereby replacing the current scattered arrangement at Fort St George. This change is intended to ensure efficient governance for the next century, as stated by the Chief Minister.

Currently, Fort St George has functioned as the state’s administrative headquarters for almost 400 years but faces significant spatial limitations. Out of its 107-acre expanse, only about four acres are allocated to the Tamil Nadu government, complicating any major expansions due to the remaining area being controlled by the Defence Ministry and the Archaeological Survey of India.

The planned new complex will incorporate modern fire-safety features, accessibility options for individuals with disabilities, and adhere to green-building standards. Additionally, it will offer sufficient parking facilities, conference halls, public service centres, and other amenities for government personnel.

Development of Tamil Nadu Olympic City

In a further development, the Chief Minister announced the creation of a Tamil Nadu Olympic City in Chennai. This initiative will be overseen by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and is designed to provide world-class sports facilities.

The Olympic City project is set to include state-of-the-art sporting equipment, a high-performance training centre, and dedicated Sports Science and Sports Medicine centres. Moreover, it will feature accommodation facilities for athletes and their coaches to prepare effectively for competitions.

The primary aim of this initiative is to enhance the performance of Tamil Nadu athletes, enabling them to secure more medals at the Olympic Games and various international sporting events. The facility is intended to not only support athletes but also to foster a high level of sportsmanship within the region.

Introduction of a Motor Sports City

Additionally, the Chief Minister has proposed the establishment of a dedicated Motor Sports City in Chennai, which focuses on hosting international-standard Formula racing events. This facility is designed to accommodate races across multiple formats, including Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3, and Formula 4.

Alongside hosting events, the Motor Sports City will also serve as a training ground for aspiring professional racers. The government anticipates that this initiative will not only promote motorsport but also enhance sports tourism and contribute positively to the state’s economy.

The announcement coincides with ongoing discussions in India regarding the revival of Formula 1 racing within the country. In June, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had established a task force dedicated to exploring the potential for bringing Formula 1 back to India by 2028, highlighting the growing interest in motorsports within the nation.
