Food Relabelling Operation Discovered in Delhi, Over 40,000 Food Packs Seized

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has exposed an alleged food relabelling operation in the Okhla Industrial Area of Delhi, resulting in the seizure of more than 40,000 food packets. This operation was initiated following specific intelligence that pointed towards illegal practices by Ms Westend Corporation Pvt Ltd.

The raid, conducted by the Northern Regional Office (NRO) of FSSAI, was supervised by the Director of the organisation. Officials executed a comprehensive inspection at the company’s warehouse in Phase-II of the industrial area, which revealed numerous discrepancies in labelling and packaging of the food items stored at the site.

FSSAI officials entered the facility armed with intelligence about the manipulation of original product labels. They allegedly found evidence of food packets that carried forged manufacturing dates, expiry dates, batch numbers, and other key label information, indicating extensive fraudulent activity within the warehouse.

Equipment and Practices Discovered

During the course of the inspection, officials reportedly uncovered numerous stamps, chemical solvents, and printing machinery. These tools are believed to have been utilised to erase existing labels and create counterfeit ones with misleading information regarding products’ shelf lives.

The presence of such equipment raised concerns about the potential risks posed to consumers who might purchase items with falsified information. These practices not only jeopardise public health but also undermine trust in the food supply chain.

Authorities suspect that the operation aimed to extend the shelf life of various food items by altering their original identities, posing a significant risk to health and safety. Further investigation is needed to assess the extent of these practices and whether the affected products had been distributed to retailers.

Legal Actions and Public Appeals

In response to the findings, local law enforcement has registered a formal complaint against the food business operator, citing alleged fraudulent practices and criminal tampering with food labels. A thorough investigation is ongoing to evaluate the full scope of the operation.

The FSSAI reaffirmed its commitment to a zero-tolerance stance against food adulteration and misbranding, emphasising its responsibility to uphold public health. Administrative and legal actions will be pursued under the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, along with relevant legal frameworks.

In light of these events, FSSAI has encouraged consumers to stay vigilant and report any suspicious food products or counterfeit brands. Complaints can be lodged via the Food Safety Connect mobile application, the FoSCoS Grievance Redressal Portal, or directly with the Northern Regional Office in New Delhi. Each report related to food safety violations will undergo comprehensive investigation, aiming to protect public health and maintain the integrity of the nation’s food supply chain.
