Five Killed and Twenty-Two Injured in Blast at Damascus Cafe

The CSR Journal Magazine

A recent bomb explosion at a busy cafe in central Damascus resulted in the deaths of five individuals and left twenty-two others injured, according to reports from Syrian state media. The blast occurred on Thursday and took place near the Palace of Justice, indicating a targeted attack in a populated area.

Initial assessments by local authorities suggest that the explosive device was a crude improvised device, as stated by the Governor of Damascus, Maher Idlibi. Eyewitness reports indicated the presence of significant damage and chaos, with victims lying on the ground amid blood and debris, as shown in videos circulating on social media platforms. However, these images have not been independently verified by external agencies.

Government Response and Security Implications

This attack represents ongoing security challenges faced by the Syrian government under President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who assumed power following the overthrow of former President Bashar al-Assad in late 2024. Assad’s ouster marked the end of a prolonged civil war that lasted over fourteen years, hinting at the complexities surrounding governance and security in the region.

Since the change in leadership, Damascus has experienced several security incidents, including a car bomb explosion in May that resulted in the death of a Syrian soldier, alongside injuries to at least eighteen individuals outside the defence ministry. These events indicate a troubling trend in the capital, contributing to a sense of instability within the newly established government.

While no group has claimed responsibility for the latest explosion, security analysts have noted the actions of Islamic State, which is reportedly seeking to take advantage of the power vacuum created by Assad’s departure. The militant group has allegedly reactivated its sleeper cells, aiming to recruit new fighters and proliferate arms as the current regime attempts to consolidate control over the country.

Current Threat Landscape in Syria

The Islamic State has signalled the onset of a new phase of operations against Sharaa’s government. Although the group is considerably weaker compared to its heyday, when it held substantial territory across Syria and Iraq, it continues to pose a significant threat through sporadic insurgency-style attacks. Observers from various countries, including Syria and Iraq, view this organisation as one of the primary threats to the nation’s ongoing transition.

Opposition to Sharaa’s government also arises from remnants of the Assad regime, particularly officers and soldiers who served during the previous administration. This dynamic has prompted further violence, notably in 2025, when clashes erupted between new government forces and insurgents linked to Syria’s Alawite minority, as well as confrontations with Druze militant groups.

The recurrent violence signifies ongoing instability, which complicates efforts for political cohesion and security within the nation. As the Sharaa administration continues to establish itself, it faces an uphill battle to maintain peace and navigate the fragmented landscape inherited from the civil war and subsequent power transitions.
