Ex-eBay Employee Launches AI-Driven Company Without Human Staff

The CSR Journal Magazine

A former employee of eBay has established a marketing firm that is powered entirely by artificial intelligence, operating without traditional human staff, human resources, or managerial roles. In a recent interview with Business Insider, the founder disclosed that the company utilises 27 custom AI agents to manage various functions, including market research, advertising campaigns, analytics, creative tasks, and customer conversion processes.

The business concept emerged during a challenging phase in her life. After relocating from Switzerland to the United States, she experienced job loss at eBay amid significant layoffs within the tech sector. Rather than rejoining a saturated job market, the founder opted to develop her own venture. She launched her marketing agency in 2024, drawing from her analytics experience at eBay to construct AI workflows that automate repetitive tasks.

With the advancement of tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, she explored the potential of autonomous AI systems where multiple agents collaborate with minimal human input. The company now operates on a three-layer AI structure: the top layer governs agent functionalities, the middle layer designates specific tasks to individual AIs, and the base layer executes the assigned work.

Operational Efficiency and Cost Management

Six primary AI agents are central to this framework, focusing on essential areas such as research, finance, legal assessments, data analysis, creative direction, and workflow management. Once tasks are assigned, additional AI agents take charge of technical operations, traffic management, advertisement optimisation, and revenue-related activities. Maintaining the entire setup reportedly costs less than $1,000 each month, which includes subscriptions to various AI tools and applications.

Prior to engaging paying clients, the founder conducted tests with 14 client profiles, including personal initiatives and complimentary work for acquaintances, ensuring that the system was capable of delivering quality results consistently. Presently, the AI agents are responsible for running advertising campaigns, analysing performance metrics, enhancing creative content, and generating reports autonomously. After client onboarding, the founder typically dedicates around two hours per week to overseeing each account.

This shift towards AI-driven business processes has intensified discussions regarding the potential of AI to replace human jobs, particularly in the white-collar sector. Recently, Mustafa Suleyman of Microsoft stated that AI could automate “most, if not all” white-collar roles within the forthcoming 12 to 18 months, marking a significant transition in workplace dynamics.

Human Expertise Remains Crucial

Despite the rising role of AI in professional environments, the founder emphasised the continued importance of human expertise. She noted that while AI systems can analyse data and streamline operations, they lack the ability to exercise judgement, empathise emotionally, and gauge the atmosphere of client interactions. She maintained that domain knowledge is vital in developing reliable AI tools, especially in sectors like healthcare or law where expertise is essential.

The founder speculates that the future will see a greater shift of repetitive office tasks to AI, allowing human workers to concentrate on roles involving oversight and strategic planning. While she continues to collaborate with freelancers for certain long-time clients, new clients are onboarded exclusively through the AI-enabled system. She believes that by focusing solely on supervisory functions, she could efficiently manage up to 25 clients independently, a feat conventionally necessitating a significantly larger workforce.
