The Delhi Police has uncovered an interstate operation alleged to be involved in the sale of counterfeit and adulterated medicines, particularly targeting cancer treatment drugs. This initiative has led to the recovery of vials supplied through a health scheme run by the Rajasthan government, which were meant for use in state hospitals. As a result of the revelations, Rajasthan’s Health Minister, Gajendra Singh Khimsar, has initiated an inquiry into the situation.

Evidence collected indicates that the racket consisted of stealing authentic vials containing cancer medication, extracting their contents, and refilling these with an unknown liquid, likely water, for subsequent sale in the black market. A prominent drug under investigation is Avelumab, a costly cancer medication reportedly priced at approximately Rs 1 lakh per vial in Delhi.

The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch had the seized products analysed through a laboratory affiliated with the pharmaceutical company Merck in Germany. The examination confirmed that the vials contained no trace of the active ingredient intended for cancer treatment, raising alarm over the potential health risks posed to patients.

Health Minister Orders Detailed Investigation

In light of these revelations, Khimsar has directed health officials to scrutinise the full supply chain of the implicated medicines. This includes reviewing stock registers, despatch records, and distribution logs at hospital facilities. The minister emphasised that the unauthorised sale of life-saving medications intended for patients in government hospitals will not be tolerated.

In conjunction with the investigation, Khimsar instructed officials to assume accountability and implement strict measures should any irregularities, negligence, or collusion be discovered. He also called for improvements in the transparency and integrity of the supply and distribution systems for government medicines to ensure patient safety.

The minister assured that the access to and safe utilisation of expensive medications for serious illnesses like cancer is being monitored continuously. He emphasised the importance of safeguarding patients from being misled into purchasing ineffective treatments.

Continued Investigations into Medicine Diversion

As investigations proceed, the Delhi Police is delving deeper into how medications provided under the Rajasthan government scheme allegedly made their way to the black market. They are seeking to identify individuals involved in the diversion of these drugs and exploring whether other life-saving pharmaceuticals introduced through government channels have also been manipulated and unlawfully sold.

The inquiry aims to uncover a more extensive network associated with the smuggling, adulteration, and distribution of counterfeit or unapproved medical products. Officials have stated that further actions in Rajasthan will be determined based on the findings from the ongoing enquiry.
